Remnants of a mod? Bit of advice needed

I bought my Mini second hand and really happy with it; no problems just really like & enjoy the car.

More of a curiosity thing than a problem or issue…..

I’ve attached a pic of the engine (I know nothing about engines so might look daft with this question). You can see there’s a piece that looks really rusty; just wondered if anyone could shed any light on what it is or why it’s like that?

To a totally uneducated car person like me it looks as if it has had something attached to it in the past……..as I say I know nothing so don’t know if a modification has been attached here but thought someone on here was bound to know and between all the people there’s usually no question which cant be answered!

Thanks in advance as always!

Cheers

Would have to agree it's probably normal. Iron rusts, aluminium doesn't which highlights the difference.
However, your engine mount looks a bit suspicious, almost as if it's leaking. I saw a post that suggested they might be fluid damped, so check to see if the mounting body is wet or oily. Could be just a trick of the light on the photo though!
