TwinCharging my Mini

Just wondering if it is smarter just to buy the Alta "Twurbo" kit, or attempt to custom fabricate my own. I have the skills to do it I just dont know if its really worth my time and energy to go through all of the measuring and cutting and welding to get the job done right. My guess is that custom fabrication would be cheaper, the only problem is that my car would be out of commision for a long time. versus paying the 3600 for the "Twurbo" kit, installing it myself (which would still take at least a weekend) I dont know if the price difference is really worth it. What do you guys think?

Personally I don't have the skills to produce a turbo kit, so I would purchase one should it be the sort of thing i was after.

Pro's of building your own:
  • Money saving
  • Tuned how you want it
Pro's of buying one:
  • Vast time saving
  • Hopefully get a tried and tested product
  • Company backup from Alta should anything go wrong
I think if i could afford it, even if i could build my own, I'd by the ready developed item.

Your choice though of course... and good luck with what you decide

I would suggest speak to lohen (lohen.co.uk - Nick is their Turbo/Charger specialist)

I thought twincharging was REALLY expensive. $3800 for the kit, plus at least a bigger intercooler. Anyone know how much fitting would be? Surely can't be that much.

Not that I'd do it anyway. Not yet. Can't justify it. No. Must resist.

Maybe in a few years though...

edited - OK, just read another post. New gearbox in there as well if you want to go over about 250bhp, which would cost a stack, and various other engine mods. Someone quoted £7k ish in the other thread. That's a lot of cash! Wish i had the knowledge to work on my own car.

but when you do something like this you do it with the intention of making a car that much quicker than standard that you have to uprate lots of other components. If someone was serious about modifying a car that much then you are already aware of what needs uprating, so £7,000 would be about right for:

Engine Mounts
Engine Pipework
The Twincharger Kit
The ECU
The Loom
The Fitting
The Dyno/The Mapping
The Clutch
Stengthening the box
The Flywheel
Exhaust System etc...

etc... it all adds up quickly

When you have the completed package there is absolutely nothing that can prepare you for the missile like performance and there is nothing like over taking supercars in something that is seen as a hairdressers car or a shopping trolley.

trust me...

Tell me about it

I can't wait for my car to be done...it will seriously annoy Porsche turbos/GT3s on the track

I'm looking into the Alta kit at: http://www.jscspeed.com/mini/mini_ba...it_coopers.htm

Has anyone installed this kit yet and what type of performance gains have you seen (this web site claims up to 400 HP).

Also, would the Alta kit above be "safe" for the car, or should additional parts be installed to be up-to-par with the upgraded parts (right now I have a MCS, JCW 195 & 210 Kits, JCMS Cat Pipe and Manifold, Dinan Cold Induction Filter).

If you BUILD the engine, the kit can produce up to 400hp. I was told that the internals would have to be beefed up if you get around the 275-300hp mark. Alta claims approx 220-230 wheel hp out of the box. Im planning on getting the kit. My plans are install the kit, get a Turbo timer, Electronic Boost Controller then a Apexi SAFC. I would like to run about 18-20 lbs, but was told I would need bigger injectors, and a fuel pump.

What about a beefier drive-shaft? That's the first thing that my brother told me that I'd need.

I dont know if they even sell beefier drive-shafts for the MINI. I have never seen them for sale. I know a LSD would be needed when you get up there in hp.
