New England summer gas screws the MINI engine mapping.
Been discussed at great length on MINI2 and my weblog:
http://www.gbmini.net/mtblog/archive.../bad_gas.shtml
http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fi...-problems.html

Basically it seems that MINI uses a sensor that doesn't work when cold, so the engine computer "guesses" and gets it wrong when the gas formulation changes dramatically (as it does winter->summer & summer->winter here).

Trying a lower octane gas (89) might help.

thought the o2 sensors were heated to prevent this?

what other sensors other than coolant temp, map, and ambient temp are there in regard to cold start?

I am convinced all MINI cold start issues have to do with people not heeding the instructions (well hidden by the way) that you should wait a few seconds after turning the contact on before hitting the starter. This allows the fuel pump to fully load all circuits in the injection system. I know that I had those issues and once I built the delay into mu starting routine, never looked back (unless of course I am in a hurry get in and hit the starter right ogg on a cold morning.....)

I also tried waiting 5s between key position 2 and engine turn-over; it made no difference
