Fitting an air filter

Hi,

I have searched on here but have found nothing really relevant to what I'm after. (Probably because its really easy to do!)!

Ive now got a K&N panel filter, which I just want to fit to replace the stock one.

What are the steps to fitting it? After looking, there seems to be a couple of other parts in the engine attached slightly to the air box. Do i just need to unscrew the top of the air box?...etc

Thankyou
Tom

I never done a panel filter with mine I done the whole induction kit, but with a panel filter im pretty sure it's just unscrew the top of the airbox, take out the old filter, drop the new one in, put the airbox back together........Done

hey tom
i have replaced my air filter with a k&n...like greenie says its a couple of screws but you have to undo a small hose which has this fancy clip holding it on.. altho easy to take off ,i found getting it back on a real pain ,if you have no probs great but if like me you cant seem to get the clip attached, what i did was clicked the clip on the hose and then with a little grease pushed it on the attachment ... good luck

You have to take off the metal cuff around the tube that goes into the airbox. I couldn't get mine back on, and just replaced it with a normal one with a screw.

Also, when you take off the top of the box, there is a plastic fusebox that must be taken off from the side of the box, and I believe (but am not sure) that there are clips behind the box as well.

good luck!

Thanks for the replys.

It sounds like to much hassle for what its worth.

I was hoping you just unscrewed 4 screws and dropped in the new one. (like i did on my vw)

Any difference on an S really? Slight supercharger noise increase?

its difficult but do'able without detatching anything

1).Unclip the battery jump start +ve terminal box on the side of the air filter and push it out of the way.
2). unscrew the torx screws holding the airbox top on
3). lift the front of the airbox up and push it back lightly towards the bulkhead - which stretches the hose momentarily, which unclips it from the back - keeping hold of it
4).grab the old airfilter and slide it through the gap(this needs a bit of man handing the box top by the way)
5). push the new one through the gap and let it drop into place
6). hook the rear of the airfilter box back on and then reverse the proceedure to screw the top on etc
Make sure the lid sits flush all round and is firmly attached at the rear

At least thats how i did mine on the drive in 10 minutes without undoing that pesky oem clip...

My S seems very slightly smoother with one on, and not so lumpy at cruise, no real sound difference - maybe slightly noisier but not that the ear can really decide over the brain wanting it to sound a bit louder....

No, don't give up! We made it sound more complicated than it was with our very explicit directions. It is really not so bad. Just buy an extra metal cuff, just incase you can't get the original back on. (Plus, it makes access easier for future work)

Like zipperblues said " Don't give up".

I bought the filter and had the same feeling initially, then it got left in garage for 3 months ! It's acutally a five mins job.
The hardest part is getting the hose clip off and on (if you want to re-use the clip wihch is reusable one). In the end I bought a special plier for the CLIC-R clip but it took me 10 mins to figure out how to use this plier to get the clip back on ! Then it just a 2 sec job clipping it back. Althernatively you can replace the clip with the screw type.

It sounds a lot of hassle but it well worth it. I am getting a slight improvement in fuel consumption - about 3 mpg more. And you don't have to replace the filter every year except cleaning it with K&N specail cleaning kit.

Good luck !

Hi Tom,

Sorry mate do you have a Cooper or an S, your SUPERcharged label suggests the S...

In my Cooper there was a small hose on the right hand side of the airbox that was attached to the side of the box with a clip. I didn't bother removing the clip I just cut the cable tie holding the hose to it. This then allowed me to slide the airbox out of the way much more easily once the two torx screws were undone. After that all was needed was a new cable tie to replace the cut one.

If this isn't relevant to you my apologies.

What new bits? I didn't buy any new bits...
