JCW Air Filter retro fit recoding

Hi guys n gals

Anyone out there had experience of fitting a John Cooper Works air filter themselves? The reason I ask is the instructions refer to some recoding using JCW software. Is this absolutly necessary or will it work fine (ie Flap opens at 4500 rpm) with out the recoding?

The flap will open with no recoding - it just senses the RPMs.
The recoding presumably changes the engine map to make better use of the extra air flow at high RPMs - or possibly the recoding is only if installed as part of the JCW upgrade? I don't remember GBMINI#3 needing any reprogramming after the JCW air filter was fitted

The flap is acutated by a vacum sensor - not sure if there is any specific programming for the ECU to optimise for the extra flow - but over time it will "learn" this anyway.

No reprogramming is required, just fit it according to the instructions and then drive it like you stole it

The airbox control unit needs to be wired to the ECU so it can "read" the RPMs and open the flap at 4500.

Depends if you want to keep your warranty or not. Its no better than an aftermarket CAI, but more expensive.

Where I think it *is* better than aftermarket, is that it's only noisy at high revs - for everyday driving (below 4500rpm) it's no noisier than the stock intake, while most aftermarkets are noisy all the time.
But I guess if noise is your thing, that could be a downside

Well... comes down to personal preference. I find with my Alta intake that is not loud at all for "normal" driving, and only loud when I really punch it.

What I'm more interested in is how you can keep her below 4500RPM!?!? I can't manage to stop her creeping above (well, well above ) even for day to day driving .

Maybe the GP will be harder to keep at low revs

If I were Mini, I'd actually put it in the paperwork that if you didn't keep it over 4500rpm for the majority of the time, they reposess the car
