clutch pedal grind

hey folks,

Have something weird happening in the last few days.. after abt 30 mins of driving I start getting a grinding feel from the clutch pedal when I press down on it. Occassionally the pedal squeaks but other than that nothing else. Any ideas what this could be? Will be taking it to MINI to get checked out though... quite worrisome... I'm still covered under warranty though, but nonetheless still worried...

It can be only 2 areas.
1 Thrust washer
2. Clutch plates warped.
I hope neither 'cos it means the gearbox has to come out.

What's a thrust washer?

put it in neutral . depress clutch. if noisy . on or off the clutch; it's more than likely a throw out bearing.

Sorry, thats the UK term, its the "throw out bearing". When the clutch is depressed it first activates the thrust washer which then presses the rod which activates the cluitch plates.

Just got a phone call from BMW. They reckon that grinding feeling is coz vibrations are "coming through" the flywheel and that by putting a "heavier" flywheel will fix this. WTF?!? They haven't installed the flywheel yet, but I'll be sure to tell them that in no way is a heavier flywheel getting put on my car. Either they give me an OEM one, or source me a lighter flywheel.... I suspect that there's something else they're not telling me.

Just an update... picked up the car... BMW said they're basically installing a revised flywheel/harmonic damper thingamejig as they're aware some cars have this issue.
