Offline | All because of this!!!!! No 4 cylinder inlet valve decided to let go and caused a serious misfire! Stripped the head off and found that the valve spring had broken! I'm replacing all 16 as per BMW's instructions. Cost: Head gasket set £132 16 valve springs £ 55 10 Head bolts £22 Elastaplast £2.73 Doing it myself Priceless! ![]() |

Offline | I think this type of failure is fairly uncommon, but when I phoned BMW to order a new valve spring they told me that an "uprated" spring set should be fitted. So wether they've had problems with the valve springs breaking I don't know. My has covered a fair few miles, 92k to be exact, so a failure like this doesn't suprise me. My Mini One has been remapped and now all the revs are used. Although my wife drives the car on a daily basis I do, now and again, thrash the nuts off it! The day before the spring broke I had been driving it hard. It's just a pity a broke on my wife on her way to work! oops! |

Offline | I'm just finding it quite surprising that you're doing some head work on grass and outside .Might as well get ye' 'olde die grinder out and give her a basic touchup while you're in there!! |
