after some final tweeks, the cooper s intake is in production!

even with the new proto, we saw the heatshield do a great job of keeping out hot engine compartment air. inside the intake, temp was 99 deg F. on the outside of the shield, we measured over 130 deg F.

one tester of the prototype dyno'd the new intake at 9.3hp at the wheels. this was without adaptation whatsoever (which typically means better figures, when the car "learns" of the increased airflow).

so, we have a few more parts to wait for our production units, but it promises to be VERY complete with our recent changes that it will not disappoint!

anyone interested in a black powdercoated (crinkle finish) version of the intake heat shield, or is everyone happy with the stainless steel finish?

Intake

In my own opinion the most restictive part of the factory intake is the bends and slots in the hoses leading to the air box, in the pictures from rogue they use those hoses. I would think using hoses that dont have those little bends and what not would be better. There is also an opening in the hose that leads to the engine compartment,i guess to cool it off that takes away from the air going into the intake.

packaging is an issue in both the standard cooper and MCS. it's labyrinth of hose to get outside air to the engine compartment but also prevents water from entering the system.

imagine cutting out all the hoses and running a "ram style" intake from under the car (theoretically). you'd get lots of fresh air, without the bends. however, if this new "fresh air" tube isn't knocked off in daily driving, it would need another method of making sure water didn't enter into the intercooler, and into the motor. of course, this is with the theory that there is the room to do such a thing.

as an added benefit, you can actually HEAR the supercharger now! no more sewing machine sounds, but pure mechanical music!

the issue inherit with any dyno that show HP gains, it's not real world. no fresh air, just a fan blowing air around. then again, it's about as good as it gets to showing any kinds of gains (until you can quantify a butt dyno!).

Finally I understand

So it's water that stops us eh?? I looked and like everyone thought, "Hey cut it off and attach a ram pod to the supercharge entrance, that should save about 20 feet of piping but now your saying that we'll get water in if we do eh? Do you think we could modify a plate to stop water intake as I still agree you have to loose 4-5 HP in those pipes the way they sit now, surely.

AEM makes a bypass valve, to prevent water from getting into the engine internals, but its made for longer sections of pipe.

You may be loosing a little with the intake configuration, but the beauty of the Rogue Engineering CAI is that it bolts right up in just a matter of minutes with simple hand tools.

we'll try to find other horsepower in other areas of the car (maybe the glovebox!)

Minime s, check out BMP Design... http://www.bmpdesign.com/promini/contents.shtml

On their website it says coming soon, but in an add in European Car magazine it says it for sale. I'd try them if i were you.
Also, it says is due on on 8/10 on the website, maybe they haven't updated their site in awhile.
