I can't see the benefit of it. Surely it's less responsive due to it running from exhaust gases as opposed to straight from the engine?

Modern technology with superchargers means they're favoured over turbos. Cooler temperatures, no lag etc. Personally, I'd uprate the supercharger rather than spending money turbocharging.

It has been done before.

HKS used to make a Twin Charger kit for the Supercharged MR2 (88-89). It used a low pressure turbo in addition to the stock roots type blower. This kit worked well for the MR2 and made a lot of power. It was also reliable.

A problem would be chipping to allow adjustment of mixture, otherwise the S engine would appear ideal with it's 8.3 to 1 pistons and upgraded exhaust parts.

The old trick on turbocharging is to have cockpit adjustable power via a fishtank aerator valve. Mount a 6 lb. wastegate for superior gas mileage, then tap into it with a little piece of tubing. Route the tubing to the dash to a fish tank air valve and bleed air from the wastegate, fooling it into thinking the 6 lbs. has hot been reached yet. Need a boost gauge to mark settings so you don't overboost. Jack it up to 15 lbs. to make it fly, and drop it back to save gas.

Works good on a Turbo Metro with the Garret unit right up until the A+ engine blows up!

Maby for a MINI. I don't see it becoming a modification for a S.

I don't think anybody would buy it for an S. I could see people buying it for a MINI if it was made right.

The Mini-Mania website says that they are working on developing one. I'm pretty sure that it would be for a Cooper not an S.

A turbo would net more power but the power band would be totally different , ill compare a vw G60 which is similar , the highest dynoed 8v G60 is 192hp and 199tq at the wheels this car was running 18psi,Air to Water IC no cam but massive headwork was done most G60s running 16psi/Cam/Chip/Intake/Exhaust/stock head and stock A=>A IC run roung 170-180 for both hp and tq , now one guy dynoed his Turbo converted G60 w/ 214hp and 239tq at the wheels running 20psi and 30# injectors and custom chip thats it, youll net more power but drivability will be totally different for a daily driver id stay S/C'd but for a weekend warrior go Turbo
