DIY Getrag 6-speed gearbox

Hi all technical people...

I have read that the cooper S gearbox is designed to take no more than 210Nm of torque.

Do we know if this is the torque input or torque output?

I assume that the gearing inside would result in a torque output of higher than 210Nm if that was the rate provided from the engine?

A quick understanding of this would be greatly appreciated...

Cheers,
CSW.

The rating is input torque as delivered from the engine. Our Getrag has a "manufacturer rating" of 155Lb-Ft. That said, it's the same gearbox that is used in the JCW and GP, and those have more than that. Beyond that, some tuners extract relatively big torque numbers from the engine, north of 300Lb-Ft, without grenading the gearbox. I run my Cooper S at 270Lb-Ft at the crank with the stock gearbox at and have 64k miles on it, with no weirdness.

The weakest part of the geabox is pretty much the standard open diff. Replace that with a Quaife and you will have a very hard time trying to break the thing, unless you are into crunching through gear changes The Quaife is rated to 700bhp going off previous applications.

The Fireballed car runs a stock Getrag gearbox with a stock LSD on the drag strip no problems. 500+ bhp and more torque than will ever be possible to produce with the supercharger alone.

Cheers,

Henry
