Lightweight crank pulleys & impact on reliability

Guys

Any experience or thoughts re. the long-term effects of having a lightweight crank pulley?

I would have thought that the OEM pulley mass would act as a dampener to smooth out crank harmonics, and am worried about the long-term impact on the crank if I instal a lwt pulley for performance reasons.

Am I worrying about nothing?

cheers

Anyone with any views on this?

I'm also tempted by a lightweight crank pulley...

I spent about 2 months trying to research this exact thing. Already had the 3% lightweight crank pulley from GT Tuning but after hearing a few negative stories held off on fitting it. From what I have read it seems incorrect fitment is the major reason for having dramas.

I asked my BMW service dude what the long term effects would be and he said in 2/300,000 kms may need new bearings. Have had mine fitted for about 3000kms now and it has completely transformed the car.

No doubt there will be a lot of folk saying dont do it, as there is no real long term data on what the effects are. Roland from GTT has 20,000+ miles on his crank pulley now without problem and his seems to be the longest tested one to date.

Some lightweight crank pulleys seem to be worse than others but I have only read good things about the GTT one. If you look on NAM there is a bit more info on them.

I had the GTT one fitted and it gave no issues over the period that I owned the car with it on (one year, 24000 miles). Made the car a joy.

According to Randy Webbs website not as hard as replacing the supercharger pulley

Thanks, pretty reassuring.

Was thinking about this last night...I guess the flywheel will still be acting as a dampener.

-Good point. KIWI Jcw.
BTW our demo ar also has a rigid lightweight alloy flywheel ASWELL as the GTT Lightweight Crank Pulley. -In essence our demo car becomes an even MORE demanding long term test on the engine/crank
Best Regards Roland GT Tuning.
