What's this pipe do?

Hi,

Just a couple of questions if anyone can help!

I'm going to be fitting a JCW air intake and part of that involves connecting it to a 'vacuum pipe'.

I know there's a pipe that carries air about half an inch thick, it comes out of the bulkhead just to the left and down of the air filter box (on a Cooper S). It's got a small connector with a white push release button.

1) Is this the same pipe needed for connecting to the JCW air intake (albeit further back near the intercooler)?

2) Considering it seems to pass into the bulkhead, what's this pipe actually used for?

Many thanks.

I don't think this is the right pipe. I did this a few weeks back and the picture included with the install instructions is pretty c**p!!! If I've done it right then its just behind the throttle body, its pretty dark and the pipes are black, also its hard to get a grip on the pipes to move them a part even with little hands like mine. I'm doing some work on my engine on Thursday so I'll see if I can get a pic or two.

That's what prompted me to post., would have been good to have some labels of sorts. Still, makes me wonder what that other pipe is for. I like things having a defined purpose :-)

I'll have another look round the bay tomorrow when it's light...

I thought of that, but from what I've read up on, you do actually need it connected.

Apparently its the vacuum in conjunction with the solenoid and wiring to the magic black box which opens the flap.

the black hose above the throttlebody is crankcase ventilation (no vacuum). it's meant to recirculate oil vapor from crankcase blow bye . to then be reburned. .

Ah right,

This is the hose I meant, on the left, labeled with the white arrow... is that the same one..?

Heh heh, no it's definitely a manual cooper S. That picture is one I found laying around on the internet so it's not my car - hence the aftermarket open filter. The pipe is the same though -

I thought it might perhaps be the air vacuum to the brake servo?
