Dump valve

Will you be rushing out to get one fitted to the R56?

Are they cool or chav?

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Its a bit ricer Pat, imo Has a whole set of connotations and perceptions attached to it - well I do get a picture of the car and driver in my head anyway, when I hear one blow

Someone might fit one, but I wouldn't I must admit

nope, not an ounce:
Quote:
Dump valves are fitted to the engines of (usually older) turbo charged cars and sit between the turbo outlet and the throttle body. When transitioning from a boosted state to a closed throttle state (as in between shifts), due to inertia, the turbo continues to pressurize air, but the closed throttle prevents the compressed air from entering the engine. In this case the pressure exceeds the preset spring pressure in the dump valve and the excess pressure is bled off to atmosphere.
Even with a dump valve the compressed air acts as a brake on the turbo (slowing it down), because the pressure on the backside of the turbo is at a higher pressure than on the front side (and the air actually wants to flow through the turbo backwards).
A blowoff valve is a more elegant solution to this problem by allowing the turbo to "freewheel" when the throttle is closed (equalizing the pressure on both sides of the turbo). Unlike a dump valve a blow off valve can be used at multiple boost settings without reconfiguration.
Blow off valves (which may cause offence) are sometimes incorrectly called dump valves because they serve a similar function, however they are very different solutions to the same problem

It's no different to fitting an Air Filter and many of you who've called it 'Chav' have done just that if I'm not mistaken.

The turbo MCS is almost certainly going to have a 're-circulating ' dump valve fitted as standard also known as a closed loop dump valve (my terminology circa 1991) or bypass valve. These recirculate the air back to the 'clean side' of the air filter rather than direct to atmosphere. The latter produce the whoosh. These valves have various (proper ) functions notably to reduce lag on gearchange ,as the compressor is no longer 'stalled ' by pressure build up on its outlet side due to snap closing of the throttle, and also reduced thrust bearing wear in the turbo for the same reason. They also give a more relaxed part throttle cruise (ie less on or off power delivery) ,working in a similar way to the superchargers bypass valve in this instance.
