| The Power Cube | Review #2 All, OK, so I've had my car for nearly a month now - feels like longer, much longer. I have been enjoying driving the car and learning how to drive the car - the power delivery is different to that of my predecessor, the JCW 210. Decided that with the cold weather creeping in, it may be time to try my hand at some octane booster. This takes the 99ron fuels to approx 104ron. Now note, the octane booster is highly toxic liquid, not only does it strip paint, get absorbed by anything it touches, discolour the walls where it is placed in boxes in a room away from anyone or anything - this doesn't have an irritant orange square with black cross through it as a warning, it has a skull and cross bones, can't be sent through the post - you have to collect it directly - it is lethal stuff! So finding out that a good ratio to use is 1 bottle for a full tank I head off to the petrol station with my mate holding the bottle in the passenger foot well in 4 plastic bags, sat on cardboard and with the windows open - this is a closed, full bottle stood upright - had it have been a bottle of wine, no problem, but this is Xylene Isomers amongst other things - so rots your insides and is a carcenogenic. Right - at the petrol station - bottle out of bags and ready to empty into the fuel tank. I had decided early on that a piece of folded cardboard would be a great idea to prevent spilage should any occur. So with cardboard stuck under the fuel filler hole and lid off the octane booster i began to pour gently, after about an eggcup amount was poured I checked to see if it was going in - NO !!!!! the fuel hole had a valve on it that needed depressing to allow the flow of liquid into the tank - end result? Octane booster all over my hand, all over the cardboard, all over the floor, but non on the paint work - phew! I walked, no, paced very quickly into the petrol station and washed my hands in cold water for a good 5 minutes - beads of sweat dripping from my brow. What a mess !!!!!! Mean time, my mate was being a great help by purchasing 2 snicker bars and a mars bar and a can of coke - yes, nice help there mate. "Have you filled up yet?" he asks. Er, no mate, just trying to avoid a toxic death. The rest of the garage, with it being a saturday morning was now queing up behind us, cardboard, octane booster, plastic bags, mats etc were strewn about the rear of the car inbetween the fuel pump and i was getting really pi55ed off! So, do we have a pen, or a piece of metal so we can hold open the fuel filler valve, the part that is normally pushed open by the fuel filler nozzle. We had nothing, then i remembered - the GTT Oil Catch Can dip stick !!!! Superb! (sorry Roland!) Now with my mate using the GTT dipstick (about 6 inches long) to force open the fuel filler valve i commenced with pouring in the octane booster - this looks really dodgy in the petrol station. My mate said, wouldn't it be a real nightmare if i dropped the dipstick into the fuel tank - I didn't even comment! Right - job done. The octane booster is in the tank, i fill up with fuel and use some petrol to rinse the filling area of the fuel cap, dispose of all bottles, bags, card, and go back to wash my hands in the petrol station for 3 minutes. Back in the car, GTT dipstick returned (and washed), i am now really vexed and return home immediately - 5 minutes away, contrary to my mates comment of - "right, are we going for a burn now?" - No mate - i need to review the situation - feeling that my hand is dissolving!! 20 minutes later, 3 cups of tea and a really cold hand from washing in cold water, we look at the mini in the driveway, notice there are no paint defects (other than a few drip spots on the wheels which is OK - war wounds) and that we now have a full tank of 104ron fuel in my GTT 260 car. At this stage, the clouds clear and we think - right, time to get out !!!! Now, although the modifications are the GTT 260 package, many other parts were fitted and with the addition of a full exhaust system (and not just the re-route pipe) i feel that this car is producing a very strong 260bhp. Starting the car up seems normal (for a 260), and pulling away from 0mph seems normal (for a 260), so we drift slowly onto the motorway and maintain good cruising speeds. The car at this stage feels no different. After 10 minutes at 70mph ( ) we head towards some country districts. The car is actually starting to feel more confident, and also smooth and durable. My hand has not fallen off yet.Now one thing i have learnt about this car is that there is a way to drive it that releases the power, and so far i have not approached the car in this way. You see, we are nearly delivering 19PSI of boost here and with a rev range of 7,200 of which i have reached already you can see where the driving style is heading. For the first 20 minutes of country, we enjoy the accelration of 2nd and 3rd from around 2,000 rpm up to 6,000 rpm. Nice, progressive. Then as we approach the 3/4 full mark we think that the car knows about the octane booster and we should alter the driving style. So with a different frame of mind set, i think, can we drive the car for a good 5 minutes whilst remaining in the 4,000 and 6,800 rpm rev range? Yes. 1st gear rolling start with the gas pedal progressively floored the wheels spin and grip, 2nd, the same, then stop - we are at 60mph. That is stupidly quick. We stop, and giggle like two daft school kids!!! Oh dear - power! This car can get to speeds in 1st and 2nd without even thinking about it. You are pushed into your seat and it pulls hard, then harder, then 6,000 rpm it pulls again! there is no drop in torque, nor are you left waiting for the torque to deliver more, it's already there, done it, delivered it, and instead of thinking you could do with just a bit more power, you are laughing hysterically and looking to change into the next gear as you hit the rev limiter. Man alive. ![]() Now we spend the afternoon driving around using 3rd and sometimes 4th while in the high rev band - the car is balistic!!!! The chassis can handle this though - no torque steer due to great geometry setup, strut braces all round mean no flexing, coil-overs mean lower centre of gravity, and the AP big brake kit means we can stop in the flick of an eye. The Toyo 1-R's are dissapointing me though (on the front), always have, so on with the new GSD3's very soon (to match the rear). Having done 110 miles in a couple of hours we head off back home. I have now learnt that there is a phase 2 to this car. I think the octane booster has helped, but is not the reason for the power by any means. I think that you just have to give it time until you learn how to drive this car. Driven as a day-to-day car using the lower rev bands as well as the higher, this car pulls and drives well, better than the JCW 210. Driven in the higher rev band alone, the car become a missle, and the exhaust tells you that you are in a tuned sports car, not just a MINI with a loud exhaust sound and some preparatory modifications - i mean, this is a total upgrade, and when you change gear from 2nd to 3rd at 6500 rpm the engine sings and inhales as it is engaged into the next gear whilst the exhaust pops and drones with true rally exhillaration. Magic! True magic! I have now found the car i have always been looking for since i learnt to walk! x 100000000000000000000Cheers, K. ![]() Too many mods to list, PM me if the cat needs killing... |

| 220 of your finest horses | mmmm Makes me want to get the Suoerbee back down to Blandford - like the idea of having the front end suspension looked at - am beginning to feel that it is less then 'connected'. Be intrerested to hear what suspension kit you run and also if the AP BBK came in for any tweaks? I have the 4 pot kit on the s'bee. Cheers S ![]() Oh, and I really hope Santa brings me the GTT intercooler and black snoot boots! ![]() |

| The Power Cube | I think i need a whack on the head with a mallet for writing a review that long, even i found it hard to read. Basically, mods + octane booster = uber fast. Top car. Off to halford now (urgh, halfords!) Cheers, K. ![]() Too many mods to list, PM me if the cat needs killing... |

| The Power Cube | Octane Booster If your car benefits from high RON fuel, then yes. Timing and porting and engine tuning mods throughout help to acheive the best results. I ran 104 in mine, i am sure that an average car would enjoy 100RON. Cheers, K. ![]() Too many mods to list, PM me if the cat needs killing... |
