Can someone explain exhausts to me

Hiya guys, Im a bit confused about exhaust systems!
I have seen a few exhausts that say 'cat back and exhaust' and some just say exhaust.
Ideally I would like the Milltek one, but on a few websites I have seen it, it only says Milltek exhaust (no cat back) whereas others such as Scorpion's says cat back and exhaust.

Whats the difference, do I need a cat back? Do they sound better with one?

Also while we're on the subject, do Milltek exhausts become boomy loud when travlelling at a normal speed, I have heard the great sound they make when accelerating, but whats it like at 50mph plus - I like the quietness of the stock one at those sort of speeds, but would like a bit more noise when accelerating.

Thanks for the help
Nick

(is anyone going to the illuminations run tonight?? see you there if you are!)

OK for the MINI a cat back and an exhaust are one and the same. The cat on the MINI is part of the manifold.

The reason for the cat back term is that some cars have a pipe between the manfold and the cat and then the rest of the exhaust after the cat.

For these cars you can buy a "full system" that would include the pipe from the manfold to the cat and the pipe after the cat out to the rear of the car. The cat back exhaust does not include the front section from manifold to cat.

As the MINI doesn't have this extra pipe there is no need to worry about whether you buy one that has the cat back term listed or not as they will be the same exhaust.

It was acceptable in the 80's

yes what root ginger says is prettty much it most people just opt for the cat back which wouldn't be as loud as replacing the manifold as well but thats were the bigger power gains are to be made a cat back system will pro give 5-10 hp were as cat back + manifold will give you 15hp+ depending on the system also theres the de-cat option were by the cat is removed from the manifold this will also give extra power. As for noise the miltek isn't too loud quite zingy the play mini exhaust is also quite nice as well.

So basically just buying a Milltek Exhaust will be everything I need then, nothing else to worry about?
I reckon having an Alta Air filter fitted and a Milltek exhaust will be a good combination, should give a pretty nice sound hopefully!

Thnx for the help

DIY JCW manifold / intermediate pipe / exhaust

I am actually selling these 3 parts as a complete system.

I would also sell them as 2 seperate parts (manifold + intermediate pipe) + (exhaust)

All items are JCW originals, and were fitted by JCW themselves. The items are now off the vehicle.

Appologies in jumping in on this thread.

Cheers,
K

Yeah you just need the Milltek exhaust and that's it. Ditch the Alta in favour of the GT Tuning cold ram induction kit though

Cheers guys, can see the Milltek exhaust being my next mod!! Ive read some brilliant reviews about them and it sounds exactly how I wanted, loud when accelerating, but not dead boomy.

Thanks

The Milltek certainly won't be loud at freeway speeds. It could be a little louder when accelerating though. And, erm, if you're concerned about noise, you might want to try and get a decent ride in a car fitted with an ALTA cold air intake, that will have a far greater impact on in-cabin noise than the exhaust will.

I have both and love both, but best to be sure if you're concerned about the noise.
