A knock sensor monitors engine operation to optimise performance. In addition, a knock sensor protects the engine against power-robbing, and potentially destructive, engine knock.

Its basicaly a microphone trained to listen for a knock frequency, if the block is mounted very solid in the shell then knock will make a different sound.
