DIY Gear changing is stiff

hi there, everytime i try and change gear i have a very tough resistance. i realise minis have a compact 5 speed from the rover 25 model, but its a bit of a nuisance to drive with (mainly in 1st and 2nd). i was just wondering if anyone would know the cause of this, ive just overhauled the gearbox and no problem. so im beginning to think it is the gear selector cables. anyone had the same problem? i have a mini one 2002 btw. thanks in advance
