Arrow 98Ron, 99Ron, or 104Ron ?

What do you use, what would you use?

I prefer 104Ron, find out why here...

Cheers,
K.

98 ron, as both the main 99 rons are only 99 due to their bio ethanol content. 104 is a bit of a waste as you will need to run a around 50 miles for the adaptive ECu to adjust the timing etc to take advantage. And honestly only real real hard driving will see the benefit.

higher octane fuel is only required as a preventative measure against detonation ,for a road car it should not be necessary, the power increase with higher octanes is only by allowing running silly high boost pressures, and a very very small increase due longer burn time. there seems to be a fashion in using higher and higher octanes and claims of power increases ,probably due the use in race cars( which need it) and some import cars from japan where the fuel is 100 as standard and the ecu set up for that so the thinking is if the skylines etc use it then it must be better!!!

99 Shell. Tested on numerous ocasions as higher than 99 but only rated to that as variation never lets it drop below 99. Many other 99 fuels are the same testing at over 100 nearly every time.

99 is plenty good for most road cars...even quite highly tuned ones. Once upto 99-100 you can't really feel much change when you use octane boost or higher rate fuels even on the track as the car is usually on the limits of its most efficient burn with 99-100 octane.

to get the benefits of 104 you would need a custom map, for that very purpose.

remember the Mini's standard Map is set up to run on 91-98 Ron,

Arrow RON & Maps

OK,

Slow start i think...

I am in the right thread yes? - "Engine tuning and....."

When running high ron fuels, we all know...
  • That maps are needed
  • That the engine should be modded
My question assumed peoples knowledge of this, i was merely asking if they run these fuels given tha chance, as i can quite easily run 99ron in mine for ever, but i reckon there is great benefit to be had running 104 ron.

I was not aiming this thread towards MINI One owners, nor MINI Diesel owners - but i thought that was obvious.

Cheers,
K.

I thought that using higher octane fuels also helped to keep the engine clean? Is it not better to run a car on say 98ron compared to 95ron even on a stock cooper s?
