R56 gearchange on an R53

Having test-driven one, does anyone know what changes have been made to the linkage to the Getrag 'box?

It feels so much better it would be a worthwhile mod even if it meant changing the entire linkage!

(The ride was significantly better on 17" wheels too...)

No - according to various sources the gearbox is the same - the changes have been made to the linkage (less severe springs for a start).

Hmm, would be interested to hear more on this. Haven't driven an R56 myself, but changing gear seems to be the main issue halting progress in my car now.

Aye, I spose that is a possible solution. I also keep meaning to order myself a Whalen, as apparently they do wonders for the shift.

whalen are good but think of the amazing combination of a whalen a top a proper short shift kit only driven an S with a whalen on a track but it felt good and precise i just dont like the size of it and will be having a touring knob insted

If you believe dealers, my dealer told me the R56 has a totally new gear box compared with the outgoing model.

Personally I think the Whalen doesn't make THAT much of a difference. The stock knob is suprisingly heavy--heavier than it looks--the Whalen makes it only marginally easier to shift. I may be more psychological than anything; it's definitely not close to being in the same neighborhood of a short shifter.

I'm not trying to bash the Whalen--I love mine, and I'd strongly recommend them--but it's more of a cosmetic rather than a performance mod.

My 02 plate has almost done 60000 miles. Just recently i have had difficulty getting the gearbox into reverse gear...couple of times with 4th too...also sometimes makes that awful noise(like when u dont put your foot on the clutch). Is it time for a new gearbox...i have 5 months of warranty left if its going to break i want it to break before warranty runs out.
