"Steam" sound from exhaust area

I have a 2003 Cooper S with the 210bhp JCW kit.

Under heavy acceleration, pedal to the floor, I sometimes hear what sounds like water on hot metal; what I call "Steam" sound, from the back of the car

This happens at 5,000 rpm and get louder the higher the rpm.

Has anybody experienced this before?

Are you sure it's not the sound of the supercharger whining? There's a valve that opens in the JCW air filter to allow more air to be sucked in, this flap opens at 4500 revs and is very noticeable in engine sound.

nope; it's not the flap @ 4,500 rpm.

this sound is very distintive and literally sounds like water on hot metal and is definetly comming from the back of the car.

Windows open or closed?

Is it under only heavy acceleration or is it also there if your gentle and just run it at the rpm level your hearing it at?

that's excess plasma venting from the warp drive. :-)

If you have the JCW exhaust, they are prone to the baffles in the exhaust boxes falling out and rattling around it could be that which you are hearing-so much for JCW quality
rev the engine and listen to the rear boxes,or try wiggling them when cold and listen for a rattle

Doubt this is it but when you burn petrol, water is formed- quite a lot actually....could it actually be water in contact with the hot exhaust?
