Smile K&N 69 Series SR Typhoon Cooper S

Guys

Gonna do my intake and pulley soon. Sorted on the make of pulley but can't make up my mind on the intake. TBH the difference on intake BHP increases on the S is minimal when taken into consideration against heads, pulleys, maps, manifold/cat and intercoolers etc etc etc. Therefore I want to get the right sound more than massive power gains, as this can be done in other ways.

Now K&Ns Typhoon is not going to be the best for power as its not a full enclosed CAI but...it has some sort of shielding and a cold ram pipe and its in a location that offers the oportunity for some DIY alteration and fabrication to make it work slightly better than it does now.

The real question I have is does the K&N Typhoon on the S make the same loverly throaty sucking roar from the engine when outside the car as the ones that are fitted to the cooper? Having heard a bunch of K&N coopers on a run the other day I am thinking I want that almost Subaru impreza sounding roar and rumble from the bonnet area, so it matches my exhaust and minifold. Will the typhoon do this on the S or is its location and/or filter element (cone) different to the cooper ones and so sound different.

If you have one I'd love to hear a video of the noise from engine area on revs...not cooper ones as I know they sound great but whats the S like? I was eying up an Alta or GTT one which give better power, but the K&N appears to improve power slightly but at least it wont loose me power over the stock unit i have now and if the sound is good then i'll live with the lack of power increase and acheive these in other ways!

Cheers guys

Oh its the KN 69 Series 2021 Typhoon TR/TB/TP/TS units that I am looking at (the TR etc is just the different coloured pipes)

I used to have a K&N Typhoon CAI before my GTT conversion, and the short of it is - it won't give you that induction "roar" you get with the One/Cooper. It certainly made lots of lovely noises, but I wouldn't say "throaty" was one of them.

FWIW, I now have the GTT CAI, and it sounds even better, although this may just be due to the holes Roland drilled in the back of the airbox case.

Pity UA. I was shocked at how asmatic my S (and even some of the big boys like LD and Loui) sounded when compared to the deep engine roar from the Coopers that were on the run. I know the charger whines alot and drowns some of that out but the S just sounds so high and revvy when the cooper is so deep if fitted with a cone filter. Adrian (bluecoopers) S is deafening when it goes by (because of the whine) its just ear splitting, but its a very high note. Even Dave and Louis cars are high pitched from the engine bay, I had assumed it was cos as stock they have enclosed boxes and even when tuned they do too and so the noise is trapped a bit. Thats why I thought the KN filter might be deeper and noisier... I fancied a bit of big deep rumble like the coopers and all those lancer evo and scooby imprezas have!

but if that can't be done then I'll just go for power and get an Alta (or if GTT suddenly start doing thier intake in red .... hint, hint then i'll get one of those)

Any other comments on the KN compared to cooper versions. I wan't the noisiest filter I can get so the engine growl is very loud but that I don't loose power (no too worried if I don't gain any though)

Got the Typhoon on my MCS and i really dont notice too much difference. The only thing i do notice is a bit of a gulping sound when i first put my foot down, after that as the others have said, the supercharger drowns out all other sound. I personally love it. The supercharger makes a fantastic sound.

For a throaty sound you need to look to the exhaust surely.

hmm. wonder if drilling holes in the back of the original plastic box would help on my Typhoon by passing more fresh air over it?

Probably not worth worrying about as my MCS goes in for 210 bhp tune at minspeed in 2 weeks anyway.

I was gonna tank-cut a large hole, of the same size and approx location as the works airbox has, in my stock S airbox. Then seal a small section of pipe between that hole and the hole I cut in the scuttle panel (the works box comes with a scuttle panel section with a hole in) and then basically use my KN panel filter in what is essentially a JCW airbox but with no flap (so a bit like the JCW motorsport version of the works airbox) Cost about £30 inc panel filter...and thats just a little better than the 200+ it costs for a Alta/GTT or JCW CAI. Sure it would be pretty good and very cheap mod. However the look of having a big red pipe and filter was too much and I have now bought an Alta intake
