Tuning results posted by companies, diff for 163 vs 170?

Hi all,

Im after two bits of advice really. I am looking to tune my jan 2004 MCS up to over the 200bhp mark and have looked at the likes of lohen and gtt. My first question is that my car is I believe I am correct in saying the 163bhp model. Now when all these companies quote the power that the car will increase to, are they refering to the 163 model or the 170 model as the base starting point, or will the power for both increase to say 210? Ie the starting point makes no difference.

Secondly I want the performance from my mini but I dont really want to go down the route of induction kits and the like, I want the mods to be subtle rather than creating alot more noise etc, I want to keep a stock airbox with the addition of a panel filter if necessary. What would you people advise?

Regards
Sam

Hi Sam,

I'm in the same mindset as you, although with an 06 MCS. I changed my standard filter for the JCM Race filter from John Cooper Motorsport. This together with an MTH remap has proved to be a great investment so far. Not much noisier than the std. filter until 5k then you hear the superchager whine a little more. Next step pulley.......now if only I could decide which one !

Hi guys, the 170bhp gains its extra bhp by running a bit more ignition advance. Bear in mind some cars will have had ecu upgrades at dealers (for whatever reason) in theory taking them to the same power. So with say a GTT220 the power should be approx the same. The correct timing is generally just before knock point (idealy) at all rpm (WOT). A later car still feels quicker still due to the lower gearing plus the engine and SC may be in better condition.
Using various filter manufactures flow spec (bhp or cfm), we know the stock size filter is good for about 210 bhp. After that you will get a measurable pressure drop at the throttle body inlet. This is why the the forthcoming GTT300T and GTT 350T panel filter is (& needs to be) almost double the size of the stock one to flow the 350bhp we desire.(Its rated at approx 380bhp)

Thats very good information thankyou Roland. I am being tempted towards GTT.

However people, there is a price difference between GTT 210/215 and the Lohen 210 when you take into account that lohens prices include vat and gtt dont.

Can anyone identify to me where the price difference occurs, especially seeing as the lohen 210 has a remap whereas the gtt 210 which is more expensive doesnt.

....With GTT 210 you also get :- GTT Twin Bearing Idler Pulley ,Modified Bypass Valve ,& Colder Iridium NGK plugs. You also get a variety of checks/topups/engine valet. Also on the road we evaluate fuelling & ignition settings to ensure no pinking etc before handing the car back. Even more importantly with GTT you know it will be right first time. (100% reliability record so far ) , & safe in the knowledge you wont have to come back a second time to get it sorted out.
Best Regards Roland GTT
ps Our car runs stock map and produces 270bhp.Too lean and/or over advance on the remap and you will blow a piston. Stock ecu with its adaptation & short/long fuel trim is very clever .
