Will do mate! Phoned up the dealer today and got them put aside. Made sure he gave me an exhaust one! Got an oil filter and drain plug washer too - its oil change time. My dad who started as an apprentice mechanic is giving me a hand - so it shouldnt be that difficult Will post as soon as its on

Ok need help...i didnt want to be lying out in the cold trying to fit this so my dad suggested i go see his mate who has a garage and ramp etc. I booked the car in for 9am. Drove all the way down there. When i got there i waited an hour for them to start and when they did, they came over and told me that the engine would need to come out to get the old manifold out. At this point i then tried to explain what needed to be done to get it out. They just looked at me as if i knew nothing and then told me they couldnt do it and i would have to try a specialist! I am so mad! I actually want to try fitting this my self but have two problems. All i have is drive on ramps, i have been told this will be too low to get the manifold out the bottom-
Thanks in advance

From what ive read and been told this is absolute slosh! wer they mechano set repairers! im jus waiting for a reply from a fellow MINI2 member to go pick my Janspeed manifold up, he fitted it himself and hes explained to me thats its about 6 bolts off, swap the mani and 6 b olts on or sumthin close to that effect!

i stand corrected tho!

It all depends how brave you are i did mine on the drive with ramps, axle stands and a hydraulic jack. The main problem is gettrin the car high enough to get the manifold in and out think you need about 2-3 feet clearance. What i did was back the car up on to ramps about 1ft high jacked the front up put axle stands under then used the hydraulic jack on oneside to get it slightly higher. But you'll need to remove the heat shield as well to get more room to manouvre the manifold it took me about 3 hours start to finish but the job itself is easy it's just gettin the manifold through the whole that is tricky!!

Ok just put the car up on ramps, got the first heatshield off. Need to go measure how much clearance ive got but i doubt its 3 feet . Exhaust bolts are new so i doubt ill have any problems with getting them off. Just one thing the black bar that goes across below the manifold, joins the suspension, does it have to come off?

Edit: Damn at the point where the cat joins the exhaust its only 12 inches off the ground

No that stays on all you need to remove os the heat shield near it o and remember to unclip the sensors theres 2 one near the top of the manifold and one near the botton just follow the wires fronm the lamenar sensors they lead to 2 big black clips. I didn't have 3 feet prob 2 but it was tight

Ok well at least i know exactly what i have to do now...cheers mate. If the guy had let me used his ramp i would have done it myself easily. Im just scared i take everything off...it doesent work then i have to put it back together again.

Edit: ok my main problem appears to be getting the car high enough...woyuld it be crazy to lower the manifold out half way then cut it in half - i dont want it anyway??? lol

Yeah it's well easy with ramps i put mine on originally with ramps but they wern't available on removal. If you can get the manifold out you can get it back in if you cant you can just tighten everthing up again, it's that easy but you prob will be using some of your best french at some point tryin to get it out

Last night inthe dark lit by a 60w bulb I took off my OEM manifold and fitted a GTT one. Took two hours total including taking off the strut braces.

First off, I loosened the bolts holding the manifold to the head. I figured those would be the most likely to bind, and if I couldnt get them loose I would take it to someone else to do.

I then loosened the rest of the bolts, holding it onto the cat-back. I took the bolts out of the moutning plate for the cat-back and put a tool box to support it when it hangs down.

I found it easier to take the heatshielding off when the manifold was loose and hanging down.

I had the car up on two metal ramps I got from halfords. It gave me enough room to get the manifold out even though my car is lowered.

Once you have all the bolts out of the head and exhaust you can remove it easily enough. Unhook it from the cat-back. ITs much easier to do if you have droped the exhaust support plate. When looking up the manifold towards the engine lower the manifold until it gets stuck. you have probably got caught on the silver covered bunch of cables. Reach up and push them past the manifold.

It will get stuck again further down on a metal bar. If you turn the manifold so the cat goes towards the passenger side you should be able to pop it past the bar.

Do the reverse to fit your new manifold.I made sure everything was in place, put in the bolts on the head and hooked it up to the exhaust before putting the exhaust support plate into place. Tighten everything up.

One thing that panicked me was the smoke coming from the manifold when I first stated the car up. There was no blowing sound like it was leaking. A BMW mechanic told me that always happens and its the paint on the gasket steaming off. It stinks too.

I used two miltek and 1 oem gaskets. I used the milteks where the pipe was wider, and the oem one furthest to the back.

Haynes manual was useful the first time, which took me 6 hours due to not having it high enough off the ground and I had to go buy some additional tools. During day light it took me 1.5 hours last time, and 2 hours this time.

Just check for the exhaust blowing when someone is putting a bit of presure on the accelerator. I found the bolts holding the manifold to the exhaust loosened a bit when theyheated up, so I tightened them again.

Yup, just a pair of ramps, a halfords tools kit and a 60w inspection light. With my 17" bullets and the metal ramps from Halfords I have enough clearance to get the manifold out.

Hi,
how easy was it (did you need mechanical knowledge?) I'd quite like to fit a manifold but don't want to be without my car for a few days. If you could do some sort of instructions you would get major brownie points

Just had my Janspeed manifold fitted by me and Kwik fit lol!

i took the heat shield off - fine
took the 8 bolts off the manifold off - fine
jacked up on axel stands - fine

tried to undo the 2 bolts that join the cat to the exhaust

and

SNAP

a bolt snapped so i rang all over the place to get a new 1 with no luck!
rang kwik fit they done the job off the books for me, i put 2 bolts back on the manifold and drove there about a mile then they done it in 45mins!

i could of easily done it myself it i had the tools to take the bolts of the cat etc but they wer rusted to hell and if i treid on the 2nd bolt the same wud have happend! they heated them up with oxy acetalene torch which done the job!

It drives alot better and accelaration is much better even tho i havent tried it fully as its only been fitted for like half hour!
