Need evidence that my BMW recommend Super for a JCW car.

Hi,

My company pays for my fuel when I do business mileage. However they will only pay for “normal” unleaded and not for super unleaded.

My car has been modified to be a BBR 220 hence needs to be run on Super for maximum engine protection….. Now has anyone got any evidence from BMW that I can show my company explaining why my car need to be run on super ???

Does the JCW manual state that super is recommended ?????

Can anyone send me the extract of the appropriate pages ???

Thanks

I would doubt it very much if it is printed anywhere that you need to use super unleaded fuel

as even with super cars they dont print "super unleaded fuel only" anywhere..

high octanes are better yes.. but using a lower one will not destroy your engine as your not really going to be running it at max rpm for long periods of time..

EMPTY SPACE NEEDS FILLING....
but it has to be something that wont get me banned

do you not get payed so much per mile??? I was told by my dealer only to put super unleaded in my GP but the only place it's stated is in the user manual but i'm not sure what it states for standard 's' . Only other Option is tell your boss if he doesn't want to pay for super he provides you with a car for company use

It states it on my JCW certificate that I was issued with when the conversion was done

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

The official lin is it is recommended to use 98 octane to achieve optimum performance. There will not be any engine damage. The only difference is that the ECU will knock back timing to account for the lower octane, thus less performance.

Remember the Mini is used in in the USA and Eurpe so has to put up with and run on their low octane crap.

So you may just have to bite the bullet and run on 95. If yu do stick to Tesco's or Morrisons regular as both have a bio-ethanol content. THis gives it a slightly higher octane rating than regular bp fuel for example. Although it still says 95 on the pump, this is only an indication. But due to the bioethanl content (which has a higher natural octane) you will get a better burn on it than regular unleaded.

Sorry for the waffle.

In the UK business mileage in a private car is a flat rate of 40p per mile for the first 10000 miles
if your employer pays less you can claim the short fall as a tax benefit

But Tesco 99 is the same price round here as Shell 95 - can't you push that angle?

What rakey says. This the mini manual states somewhere to try and run it on 98 ron fuel. But doesnt say its a must!

Surely BBR can provide you with some document that says it must? Have you tuned it with BBR and said its with JCW?

for your own sanity, i suggest you take a £2.00 hit in the pocket each time ie cover the difference
not worth the worry for £100.00 odd a year

Did I read Right

a 220bhp BBR conversion on a Company Car.
Any jobs going????

Seriously though is it worth having the Free fuel? You will need to drive about 12,000 + Private mileage just to break even on the tax. Perhaps it would be better to just charge back business mileage on a mileage basis (no idea what that would be with a company car as the 40 ppm is on a non company car I think)

Time to get the Abacus out I think.....

Or if I read it wrong, this is a private car and you are charging back, then what you fill it with is up to you - you should claim on a PPm basis abd not just for the fuel. If that is all that they are offering (perhaps you work for a well known Pizza Company) then do not waste your own money and tell them to stick it!

Cant you use super unleaded and get the price of ordinary unleaded from company, and you make up the difference.

Thanks for all the advise.
The deal is that the MINI is my car which I use for company business..... The company will only reimburse me 11p per mile. It used to be 13p a mile but the rate has done down in line with the latest government guidelines.

At 13p a mile I was willing to pay the extra myself for using super unleaded, however at 11p, this would not cover the cost of normal fuel and could work out quite expensive if I use super.

Now if I could prove that my car needed to be run on super because it was a manufacture recommended then I would be able to opt for a company fuel card which would be authorised to be allowed to be used with super.

Now the company will not have heard of BBR, but for this purpose the nearest equivalent is JCW 210 engine, hence the original question.

Cheers

do you claim the difference back from the tax man like somone posted above?

As I only get 12p a mile for mine, so it doesn't actually cover the cost of the fuel, but with the tax man paying back at the end of the year it makes things a bit more balanced

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Have you actually worked out if it is economical for you to drive your car at 11p a mile?

I can't see how you can do it, petrol only maybe, but not:

Tyres
Insurance
Servicing
Fuel
Depreciation

IIRC it costs me around 18p a mile in my cheapest car to break even

pretty crap allowance if you are only getting 11p a mile for your own car. If you are not getting a monthly allowance on top and its therefore as a casual user , I would want them to supply a hire car, even wit hthe tax relief it will not cover you.
