A couple mod questions

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and i thought id ask a few questions. Sorry if this has been posted already. I have an 04 mcs and because the warranty is almost up I'm thinking about buying a 15% pulley, lightened crank pulley, and an alta cai.

1.) My question is would it be beneficial to buy an ECU remap for these types of mods.

2.) If i did buy the remap, does it reduce reliability or longevity of the car.

3.) Will i need new spark plugs?

4.) Finally, I live in the U.S. and my dealer advised me to run 89 octane. should i increase to 93 after these mods.

Thanks for the help and sorry for all the questions.

You can do those mods without a remap, make sure you run 93 and just remember how lucky you are that you dont pay $7 a gallon

Now that you mention that, $2.80 doesn't seem so bad anymore.
Basically, my biggest concern is how the remap would effect the reliability and longevity of my car. So if anyone would answer that it would be greatly appreciated. Also i was thinking about the MTH remap.

Being a US citizen living in Germany I feel the pain of high gas prices....

Anyway, as mentioned above, a remap is not needed for those mods. However, you would benefit from a remap with some extra horses and a car that understands what you have done to it. The choice is yours...

As for the plugs, there are a lot of people that agree to disagree. Personally I think that colder plugs are a joke for the MINI with what you are doing. I have been running a 15% pulley for well over six months on stock plugs with no problems. Personally I think that it is a way for vendors to simply make a sale. Now, that being said, if you go beyond a 15% then it is a different game. Either way, I don't think that a 15% pulley is going to make a big enough difference to require the colder plugs. If you do decide to go with plugs stay away from Denso as they are not really designed for the MINI. NGK are the plugs used in the JCW and stock.

Higher octane gas is better. I run 93 here and my MINI runs great. I have a MM CAI with a 15% reduction pulley and a remap.

If you're in New York then you're lucky because MTH agent Don@ DMH Motorsports is in Califon NJ.

We run $5 NGK which are good enough to ignite 300bhp nitrous Mini

Have fun with your new power

Thanks DaFlake, I appreciate the answers. The only thing im afraid of is that ive been reading about all these people who have ruined there pistons while running stock plugs. Could anyone explain to me the likelyhood of that happening and whether i should be worried about that or not

I have never read but maybe one or two people that say they have ruined their pistons on "stock" plugs. More than likely it was something else that caused the problem.

I have, however, seen many threads on people that have blown the number 2 plug out of their head leaving no threads....

The mods that you are talking about are not that big of a deal. However, if you want to run colder plugs, use NGK and not Denso. At least with NGK you will have a plug that is actually designed to work with your MINI.

Thanks again DaFlake. Also i noticed that you had a similar setup of the pulley, CAI, and remap. How noticeable is the power increase and would i be anywhere near 200 hp? What is the exact part number of those NGK Iridiums that people use? Thanks

These are the part numbers from their site.

The power in my MINI is definetly noticible. She is much more aggressive at lower RPMs and with MTH she seems to have better drivability (smoother). As for the bhp, it is hard to say as I have not done a dyno nor will I as they have to be controlled to get "real" data. Don gives some pretty good numbers on his site that are ball park. Take a look at this page Mini Tuning DMH Motorsports under the MTH section. These numbers are more representative of what you would see in the real world.

Don is a standup guy and tells you like it is. Because of this some hate him and some love him but at least you know you are getting what you paid for with him. I have been trying to get him to come over here, but he is not certain if it would be "cost effective". We shall see....
