New K&N Apollo CAI Filter

Got an email in work today from K&N regarding some new filters that they are doing.

They now make the Apollo, originally a universal cold air induction filter, in specific fitments on seven cars. Two of these are the 2002-2006 Cooper S (+18bhp) and the 2007> Cooper (+8bhp) for £174.99!!

They sent me pdf's with details and dyno graphs but they exceed Mini2's limit. If I can figure out a way to attach them i will!

Shame they don't yet make for the pre 2007 One and Cooper tho......

Anyone know how to make a PDF smaller so I can post the dyno graphs before the conspiracy theorists arrive?

Not really no...Only suggestion I have is you could take a screen shot with the pdf displayed and open/save it in paint shop then you could post that file...? Perhaps...

wow! thats some difference, for both models. Why the low HP rating though? 140 and 80 bhp on the graph? The cooper peaked at 85 bhp with the mod...

Probably wheel bhp rather than engine bhp (which is what I think Mini quote)

This was very interesting -- I'd not considered that the air filter could have such a dramatic effect. But I did some reading about this, and am concerned that one of the main downsides is that basically the air seems to be less filtered...

(Very crudely: Bigger holes, more air in, more particles in.)

To what extent is this an issue?

In particular, "With proper cleaning K&N air filters will protect your engine for the life of your vehicle."

That seems to put the onus of responsibility on the user. But how do I know I'm cleaning it properly? With an ordinary air filter, I attach it and it works...

Again, I'm sorry if I'm being overly skeptical. I'm also aware that my questions have been asked time after time in other forums (I looked at over a dozen other sites), so do feel guilty repeating them here. But I never came away with an entirely comfortable feeling from anything I read...

Well they do come with a million mile warranty...I think any filter would need proper cleaning if it were to protect the engine for its entire life.

Yes, but it's not particularly useful if the filter lasts for 1,000,000 miles but the engine falls apart after 50,000

And "proper cleaning" is still left as an unresolved issue. If I don't clean it properly, I'm presumably risking damage to my engine. That puts a significant burden of responsibility on me. This is in contrast to the current situation where I can simply leave it to the dealer to replace the air filter when necessary, and I know it "just works". (I know I'm oversimplifying here, but...)

THIS is what I was looking for originally, maybe you'll find the answers you're looking for here!

http://www.aptfast.com/KN_Additional...lter_facts.htm

It's the oiling of the filter that is the vital bit, the cleaning process is a no-brainer.

Ah, yes, that's very helpful, thank you.
I didn't see (or at least didn't find) anything equally useful on K&N's own site, which is surprising...
Hmm, immediately after writing the section below, I did actually find this (linked from here), which is almost the same article as the one you cite.
So mea culpa, I overlooked it by going straight to the FAQ.

The other thing that still at least seems absent from K&N's own site is the product itself. Is it only available in the UK? Using the search on the US site didn't return the Apollo; it's also not listed here. The UK site seemed to use the US search tool...

I think that is the old FAQ section that used to be on K&N's site. It certainly seems to answer the filtration question better than what's on the current site.

I think K&N UK are maybe little frustrated that the Apollo isn't on the website yet which is why they are relying on the UK dealer networks to make customers aware of it at the moment, hence the email we received in work.

Nice numbers!

I found in k&n website this.

The site list this adaptors:
70mm - 80mm part #85-6001.
70mm, part #85-6002, and
70mm - 60mm part #85-6003,

Will any of this kits fit the MCS? or will we have to wait for the 6006 kit?

Best regards!

Memo

The 6006 kit is already out so you won't have to wait!
