163bhp vs 170bhp MCS Tuning

Couple of quick questions about the long since passed face lift changes on the MCS, I know the gear ratios were changed and the power jumped from a quoted163 bhp to around 170 bhp.

1) I have the original ‘tall’ gearing on my ’52 plate do you gain anything comparatively for what you lose in acceleration from the revised gearing?

2) Where does the extra 7 bhp come from? When 163 and 170bhp cars are tuned ie pulley, intake etc, does this balance things out again or is a pre facelift car always 7 bhp down?
Thanks in advance!

Nick

Most of the power gain is from the teflon coated rotors on the supercharger, pre-facelift cooper s does not have the grey teflon coating.

Thanks, so is it worth an upgrade to a post face lift super charger, if one is going cheap, are there any long term issues with the coating coming off at the higher temperatures an upgraded pulley generate?

I know that MiniSport sell the supercharger for just over £300, so i presume that it is the post face-lift supercharger.

I have not heard of any issues with the coating, with regards to melting of any kind, or wearing out.

The GTT220 is a nice kit though, just too far away from where i live.

Having had both a 2002 & post Facelift 2004 MCS, overall theres not too much difference.
I could do 69 mph in 2nd in the 2002, compared to 61 mph in the 2004.
Wheras I can get 139 mph in the 2004 compared to134 in the 2002.
Thats Not too much difference in the Real World.

If your happy with your present car but looking for a litle extra power, then you might consider that instead of spending thousands by selling your 2002 for a post 2004 car, why not spend less than £700 on a 200bhp + upgrade with one of the aftermarket tuners such as Lohen or GTT etc.

Already got a GTT220 conversion, not thinking of changing until it falls to pieces , just wondered what the differences were in the real world, and if the changes made to the supercharger are worth having whilst the newer SCs are still available on ebay.

I'm not one for the traffic light grand prix, are there differences in the mid range overtaking 30-90 and the bits in between.

My question is more, about is one a better base for tuning than the other.

In that case, then Yes the post 2004 superchargers are better overall than their predecessors.
