England Cooper S Exhaust

I wonder if any one can help. I have a 2002 MCS and it is my pride and joy. It is in mint condition, I was just wondering if any one knows how long the standard mini cooper s exhaust system will last before any rust starts to be a problem as my car is coming up to been 5 years old. Full service history or course.

I have been considering changing my exhaust system to one of the Miltek options but money is a little tight at the moment so don't want to change it really if I know the standard exhaust could last for another year or so.

I am also concerned with the type of noise I am going to get from a after market exhaust. I had a Cooper on a 51 plate and bought a customised exhaust system from exhausts UK a exhaust specialist. The look of the exhaust was exactly what I was looking for, pretty much the same as the JCW round tail pipe. & performance I could not quite believe. Increased by 12 bhp.

However the tone of the exhaust was a little to much, especially when driving on motorway at a constant speed. There was a constant drone. Gear change sounded great. In the end I bought a top spec MCS & would never go back. Apart from not been able to drive past a petrol station thinking should I fill up or not. . I am sure a lot of MCS owners think exactly the same.

Would I get this droning noise with a Miltek Cooper S Exhaust system, when traveling a constant high speed on motorway, Between about 4 & 5 thousand Revs?

Generally, the problems with the MCS exhaust come from the crappy hanger brackets, not the exhaust.

The brackets tend to rust/rot at the joint and snap, I know mine did and have heard of many others with the problem. I don't recall anyone complaining about the actual exhaust yet

Thanks for that. One of my brackets is deffinately on its way out. Do you know any where that does a after market stainless bracket or do we have to go to the dealership for this? I think they are only about £25.00 from the dealer anyway.

I just made my own replacement. Try ringing around local scrap yards - you'll probabally find one for a tenner.

I don't think you'd find the Milltek too loud at all. There are a lot of guys on mini2 with it, and I haven't really heard of many compaints.

I understand what you mean about the drone; I had a Jordan Civic before my S, and in my wisdom put a Powerflow backbox on. It lasted about 3 days, because the drone from it was just at a pitch to give you a headache. Awful!

I've got the JCW exhaust on my S now, and I love it, and as far as I'm aware, the Milltek is only a bit louder. Think it just accentuates the popping and crackling, which can only be a good thing!!

On my last S the brackets rusted off after 2 years
On my current S I have just had one of the silencers replaced at 8 months at the inlet & outlet pipe welds have rusty holes in them

Is that the Works exhaust, Mikey, or standard?

Hi Adam - great questions!

Does anyone know what sort of money BMW want for fitting a Works exhaust to an MCS? Is it about £500?

Woodmans are doing it on offer in the group buy section £560 plus fitting would sooner get a Milltek or Larini for that.

£560 +fitting in my opinion is a lot of money, i have just had a borla agressive cat back fitted at 1320Autos for under £700. The quality of the material used in the borla exhaust is far better quality than you get from the jcw exhaust, and the sound is better too.

fitting isnt a hard job, between 20mins and 1hr depending on how good you are with your tools..

EMPTY SPACE NEEDS FILLING....
but it has to be something that wont get me banned

I'd be happy with a JCW exhaust but... BMW money isn't doing it for me (I'd like an upgrade but not to overloud chav levels )
