help stupid air filter question

New to mini`s. This may sound like a stupid question. Just picked up a mint 2002 mini with 11,000 miles. Just changed the oil my self..simple job. Went to change the air filter and noticed it was oily like a k&n filter. It is original I believe and needs changing. I checked my local auto store and they have a paper replacement for 17bucks. My question...... is the original filter an oil soaked one like the K&N.?? Can I clean it like a K&N. What do you suggest I use for a replacement?? Thank you

K&N is not standard ! It is aftermarket, standard one would be the paper one.

I believe you can clean and re-oil the K&N air filters... it is better than the standard so I would stick with it.

The original one is white with orange/brown rubber surround i think. The KN one is redish centre with a wire mesh over it and black rubber surround. Hope that helps

thanks for the reply. My filter is a black rubber surround. no wire mesh. orange color paper.looks like a fram filter. but it has a lite coating of oil. because I blew it out with low pressure compressed air and there was oil on my work bench (very lite grade clear oil) I`ll take it out and get the #s off it. I know there wern`t any words on it just part #`s

It sounds like a contaminated paper filter. For the cost of it, just get it swapped over to a new one.

Yeah swap it out. A KN one is only $35 for the panel I believe so if you want to put one of those in. Or for $17 just pop the paper one in
