DIY ECU - adapting to driving style

Hi,

Just a quick question. I want to understand how quickly the ECU can adapt its timing etc. when you change from one driving style to another.

If you drive conservatively (around 3,000rpm without WOT) for 90% of the time and then floor it (around 6,000 rpm with WOT) for 10% of the time, then I assume the ECU will struggle to adjust accordingly.

If you floor it all of the time then the ECU will have adapted already and will meet your needs better?

How long do you need to drive like this? 1 hr, 1 day, 1 week.......?

My concern is with how to best train the engine and what to do and what not to do.

Cheers,
K.

I Imagine the best way is to reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery over night as i cant remember exact time then drive how you would normally will prob adapt quite quickly say 100 miles or so.

My opinion would be to forget about the ecu adjusting itself, and just drive how you want to drive. Can't even imagine taking that into consideration when driving my car.

Do you think you notice any difference then when you drive it tamely and then give it some beens? (i.e. does it feel different to when you just give it to the beans most most of the time?)

the ECU can be reset without a battery disconnect & by using the digital display in the centre of the tacho. i can't remeber the exact button pressing sequence now but if you run a search on here for ECU resetting i'm sure you'll find it.

Indeed it does can just can never remeber it so always disconnect battery alternatively a bmw service manager tells me if you touch + to - it gives off a static discharge which does the same.

I'm not looking at resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery.

As far as I was aware this adaptive ECU thing is a myth. It's come about from confusion over the term adaptive. Certainly it does adapt to different fuels, temps etc but it's instantaneous. There is no capability for it to learn your driving style it just achieves it's best at any given moment in time.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Whenever the dealer resets my ECU it takes about a week to re-adjust to my driving style, maybe 100/200 miles?

Got to agree here, the car has a number of different maps in its ECU giving it fuelling and timing instructions for stuff like cold/hot temperatures or high altitudes etc. When you start the engine after resetting the ECU it will take a short drive for it to adapt to the environmental conditions or how much air it is able to get, this is the same for every Fuel Injected car. After that it isn't going to change all that much. It certainly doesn't have a Granny Map and a Nutter map

What new bits? I didn't buy any new bits...
