Australia Tuning Kits - which one?

Hey all,

I have a 2005 Cooper S. It is bog standard at the moment, but I would like to get some extra noise and oomph.

I am looking at the Stage 1 and 2 kits from Mini Mania. I was just wondering if anyone has fitted either one and the comments your would make. Do you need a special tool for the supercharge pulley?

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

how much are you looking to spend ? those kits seem to Spread the oomph around by doing the suspension etc, for the stage one and two price, you can get Alot more bang for your $$$ buy doing

The basic rule is get air and fuel in as easily as possible, keep it cool, and then get it out !
all these prices were taken off the buy it now on ebay and converted to Aus
Alta Mini AT V2.0 Intake System w/ Shroud + Silicone $306 AUS - Alot more supercharger noise - Big grins
Alta Mini Cooper S 15% Reduced V2.0 Supercharger Pulley $143 AUS - alot more low down torque and increase boost from 11.3psi to around 15psi
Alta Mini Cooper S V2.0 Top Mount Intercooler $790, now with the SC creating more pressure its alot generating alot more heat and in turn heatin the air, this baby will cool it down nicely and give you more torque and bhp, really notice after a long drive when everythings nice and hot!,

according to their figures you should be looking at 25+ odd bhp and about another 25ft/lbs of torque. Then if you want to go further, now you have the air in, you could look at
Alta Mini Cooper Stock Size Lightweight Crank Pulley $157 - reduces the rotational mass making it alot more willing to rev faster.
try and source some JCW 380cc intectors, might occasionally find some on ebay for ~ $350 aus
Get an after market ECU Map
then move onto the exhaust/ extractors cats, cams, throttle body, clutch, flywheel, etc its endless !

ow and yes you need a special tool

Increasing the power output can only be achieved by increasing the torque output ,this can only be done by passing more air through the engine.
replacing the pulley is the easiest (cheapest) method with good gains to be had ,cooler plugs are reccomended, the exhaust manifold gives the next best gains in torque and thus power.
intakes/exhausts work but add little as stand alone items .The cylinder head is the point which make the most difference in performance and sets the maximum obtainable power .
if getting injectors from ebay I would recommend you get them flow checked prior to fitting
More noise is usually produced as a result of tuning, and not usually a target, some exhausts for example can make more noise but produce less power
intercoolers can restore some of the lost power due heating of the air
Lightweight engine parts are for the final last ounce of torque to be extracted and represent less returns for your dollar, lightweight wheels are more effective as they are heavier and larger diameter than any engine part and there are 4 of them .
correct head work ,valves/cams must be tailored to the pulley size, manifold and use of the car and far too complex to explain briefly
When tuning always ask what the increase in torque is rather than bhp,it is torque that you are looking for,
remapping the ECU is again complex and depends on the air moving through the engine and other factors

Thanks for the info. I have found bmtech in Sydney who sell the parts. I will give them a call tomorrow. What have you done to yours?

Modding the MINI can be pretty cheap...

This is a rough estimation of the prices I have paid (in AUD)...

ALTA v1 15% pulley - $200
Replacement belt - $35
ALTA CAI - $350
MTH Tuner file - $550
Milltek cat-back - $1600

All parts fitted by the Canberra mod squad, costing me a few pizzas.
