Hole in back of Air box..?

Guys,

Was cleaning my pipercross air filter on my MCS last night and noticed a hole in the back of the air box (bulkhead end)?

What's it for? I always though air-boxes were meant to be sealed so the air goes in one direction - to the engine?

It's to allow extra air in from the scuttle panel and also a bit more induction sound out to your ears

The Works airbox has an extra ( lot larger ) hole.

I dont' see how you could make the hole bigger ... it sits below the panel filter and is connected by a rubber boot to the partition between the engine bay and cowl area.

You can make the hole bigger. I used a hole saw on mine and cut the hole in the bottom of the box and the partition. I then sealed the connection between the two with a cut piece of foam.

Has anybody done any measurements on whether the base of the windshield is a high pressure or low pressure area? It looks to me like it would be a low pressure area. It would tend to suck air out of the airbox. Therefore I agree the hole is probably an acoustic modification. Making the hole bigger may starve the engine for air and make it run leaner, or reduce input of fuel / horsepower to keep the engine from going lean.
