It's an oil catch can and it stops oil entering the intercooler.

the OC has lots of fit young ladies, why did i think of that 1st as well

occ = oil catch can
which works via breather pipe, helps to keep oil out of your intercooler,

Is an oil catch can just simply a small sealed container with a pipe in and and pipe out, or is the insides of a complex structure?

Complex? not really.... mostly just single or multiple chambers and maybe a bit of gauze to cause a small restriction between them. All in all to cause the oil to drop out as passing through being naturally much heavier than air. Put the air and oil in the bottom of the chambers and take the air out at the top so the oil would have to travel the height of the can to leave again.

Only complex in the being able to successfully making a quality design that works really well. So anyone to make a good working one should be congratulated.

Looking a Final Year Engineering Project, and and design, analysis and build of a oil catch can might be an idea.

Will the oil travel up hill enough, or does it run back down and collect in the pipes?

It looks very nice

You would hope that the inlet pipe allows enough clearance between the bottom of the can and the end of the pipe for the oil to rest.....
