Ticking noise from engine! Help!!

Hi all, wonder if you could help me? My January 2004 MINI one has started to make a noise what i can only describe as a ticking noise. This happens from start up so on a cold engine, also on an engine that has been driven and run for 5 mins.

I have read on MINI2 that this could be a fan belt? It was stated that they need to be changed every 12 thousand miles or once a year whatever comes sooner. Is this correct?

Any other ideas as to what this noise could be? I will try to get some sound clips soon of it. I am taking her in to my local garage on friday and leaving her overnight for them to test her on a cold engine in the morning.

My other Cooper has the same noise and his a 51 plate. Any help at all is much appreciated.

My May 04 MCS has this sound aswel, from reading another thread i thought this could be the tappets and apparently an oil change cures it but ive just had a service and its still there, and as you say still there after 5 mins of engine running but it goes soon after!

Hi Scottyboy230 thanks for your reply, my MINI is due a oil service in 2 thousand miles time so maybe it is linked. Ill let you know how i get on if i find out on Saturday. Fingers crossed its nothing big! It was never there when i bought her, i have heard new R56's with a similar sound but i dont think its linked to same prob. Dont like my MINI sounding like this so i hope i found out what it is.

One of my friends whos a mechanic said he reckons its the tappets also....

He said they are hydraulic tappets that start to fill with oil when the car is started so they run abit loud until they do fill.

Im thinking of getting an opinon from the dealer but i dont get home from work for another 6 days so ill await you advice on this

Hi Vikki....

Tappety noises can be caused by low oil levels, have you checked yours?

Other various moving parts can do it, belts etc... You can buy some belt dressing from Halfords which will reduce belt slippage and could eliminate the noise... usually just an aerosol you spray onto the moving belts...

The fuel injection does make a small ticking noise though... this is normal

I come back about 4.30 at the latest and went out there to record that at 8.30 approx both times. The temp gauge was just a nudge over cold. That was recorded in the garage. she wasent as loud as normal as shes still warm a tiny bit and the exhaust was making too much noise. But yea once engine is warm after a little while and driven it goes away for me as well. We will get to the bottom of this !! i think mine has a steering rack prob now as when i turn the steering wheel to the right it clonks but that on another thread. shes going to the garage on friday afternoon i hope to find out Saturday.

Sounds really noisy to me.... but might be the recording.

When was the oil last changed? Checked the level?
Exhaust manifold tighten properly?
Most noise from front, back or top?

How much oil is in the power steering? Worth checking its not the power steering pump running dry.
