DIY Change Spark Plugs

Hi, Ive just got some new Iridium spark plugs (BKR7EIX) and wanting to change them over the weekend.

I want to know is it just a simple case of pulling the old out and in with the new? Or do i need a degree in mechanics and spark plug development & history? Do they need Gapping? and i dont have a socket set so can i do it with a simple spanner?

Also what do these pictures mean on the side of 1 of the plug boxes? No.2 in particular.

Thanks

Its a simple job but impossible for you and your spanner as you will need a plug socket!

so if i get a plug socket is it then just a case of taking the others out and put the new 1 in, 1 at a time?

Yup one at a time. The rubber HT lead cover pulls off with a bit of persuasion. You'll need a 16mm socket. I've got one if you want to wait a couple of weeks to borrow it? If you can't wait one will set you back about £15

edit - put them back in hand tight and nip about 1/16th of a turn. I think its 22nm if you have a torque wrench

Hi Guys, check out the next edition of Modern Mini mag. There's a GTT guide to fitting plugs in there, with pics.

Yep its a simple 1 replaces one job out of the box (well my NGK irridium range 7 ones were) The gap out of the box was so close to the haynes manual measurements I didn't change the gap.

The 3 things 9/10 people forget to do are:-
1) Tighten them up sufficiently (They undo & strip the threads if you dont)
2) Copper slip the threads (they sieze in the head if you dont)
3) Use Dielectric grease on the nipple. (without it the leads are impossible to remove if left a long time ...can end in the connector at the end of the lead breaking off and leaving it behind on the plug)
Simple jobs done incorrectly can cause major expensive problems.

Rolland what do you mean by cooper slip the threads?

Sorry for all the questions but id rather learn how to do this my self rather than pay someone 60 quid to do it.

Does what it says on the tin! I've got some of this as well.

Get an old paintbrush [or your fingers] and run it around the thread before you put the plug in. I've never used grease on nipple [rhubarb] so there's something I've learned.

My boot is my tool shed! It goes where I go, like some kind of new age traveller

its also probably why I'm the slowest out on runs as my car weighs twice as much as everyone elses

lol that might explain the speed issue

Got them changed on Saturday. A big thank you to Marcy for the help.

What a change in the drive of the car with them changed. Better fuel consumption. Gone from a measly 30mpg to a massive 35-37mpg, depending on how heavy my foot is. And if i took it easier im sure it will go higher still.

Car is smoother to drive aswell, it seems to pull better when my foot goes down and accelerates easier. A real good change.

Would recommend changing the plugs to any one now.

I was wondering...on a modded MINI ONE, would you get oem spark plugs or would you recommend something different?

Take into account that I'm going to fit sport manifold, complete cat-back exhaust, Gruppe M airbox, Shrick cams, ported head (possibly with larger exhaust valves) and obviously a remap.

With those engine mods i deffo recommend changing to the iridium plugs. they will then be able to cope with the extra heat generated in your engine more easily.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind for when I fit these things on my engine (not all together, but still...)
