Question Boost, leak? bypass valve - boots

Hi

I own a pre-facelift s with no mods to the engine, I fitted a boost gauge over the weekend and am about to RR it before I start changing things. I don't know what the standard boost is supposed to be? I know that variants can make a change to this , I would like to know what I should be seeing.

Currently at 7degrees C I was seeing 7psi through 1,2 and then in 3,4, I could see 9psi. Now I was expecting more and presume that I have a leak either at the boots or the bypass. Now how do i find out about the bypass leaking and ensure that it is not?

I am going to order new boots as I can move the things even when they are tight! I will also have the boost checked on the RR but at the moment I want to get things sorted. I was expecting about 14psi at top boost (am I wrong?)

Thanks for your advice, if anyone knows a good set of boots please let me have your recommendation.

Richard

As far as i know, most S owners get a max peak of about 13 psi, and normal running of 10-11 psi. There are lots of variables which can effect this however, for example, does your car have the teflon coated supercharger etc. (i know your car wont because it is pre facelift).

I think you have to remove the BPV, and check it. Keep us posted about whether the new boots, up the boost.

Ps. the GTT boots or the alta ones are both good ive heard

I do not have the face lift rotors yet, but that is something I want to fit when I get the time.
I will post up on the boots, I know I have some leak because I can hear the supercharger whine which I couldn't last week, now I am unsure if this is due to the boost gauge or moving the intercooler.

How to you optimize the bypass valve? thanks

the figures you state for a non modded S sound about right. As for testing leaks on the boots, try spraying wd-40 around the boots whilst the engine is running and listen for a change in idle speed as the wd40 temp seals the leak and is sucked in by the Vacuum.

Went for a hard drive today and whilst I can here the whine of the blower, I did reach 11psi therefore I can only presume that the noise is comming from the boost gauge. I will still trial the new boots and se what happens and I will also look at the bypass valve.

Thanks

Still always interesting that people get more boost in 3rd gear and above.....

You just need to check that when the bypass valve closes that it seals really well and doesnt leave a gap robbing you of valuable pressure. There really isnt too many joins where you could be loosing pressure but really your number dont look too bad to me

No idea what standard is but 17% +1% crank is about 18PSI

17% and stock crank off boost guage which goes to 17psi. Im assuming it wouldnt be much off though if you get 18psi mini-morgan.

18PSI at 70mph in 3rd gear...... havent taken it to the rev limiter with the data logger attached to see what the max is.

Well ordered the GTT version of the boots, so will get them on at the weekend and also look at the bypass valve and ensure that it closes.

Thanks for the help, do you think I will need any extra gaskets when fixing the bypass? I know I need a hose clip.
