| MINI2 Master | low boost? could it be bypass valve Ok, just wondering if anyone knows the answer here, if not i will be getting a mate to have a looky. Heres what happened first, pulled out of a junction and absoloutly floored it, had no traction on and it span up in first then i banged it to 2nd and again it pulled like a trin, then as it went through the revs at about 5500-6000rpm i felt a slight back off on power, almost like clutch slip in a way, so calmed down and into 3rd. So first of all i gave it a mile of sympathetic driving to cool down, then tried the old clutch slip test so tried pinning it in 5th at 30mph and nothing strange, pulled slowly as it should, so ruled out clutch. but then noticed with the traction turned back on and booting it in 2nd and 3rd it was only boosting to about 14-psi and it wa snot triggering the traction light to come on to signify hitting 18psi like it always did before. Now the car felt ok ish, but not bang you in the back of the seat fast , almost like there was lower boost. So i am left wondering, as no fault codes are showing, could it be the Bypass valve has fecked up, or could it be a boost leak somewhere, apart from the intercooler could it be anywhere else ( i am runnign GRS i/c with GTT snoot boots) have done a search on here but nothing seems to match ( easily) also done an ECu reset to rule out any limp modes etc. Anybody ideas at all. No other sysptoms to report other than sluggish performance. oh and runs on 99 V-max. cheers guys |

![]() Obsessive Car Cleaner OCC | The bypass valve is under the throttle body just to the let, id say to change if you never done it before will take and hour n half with no help at all. To optimize it is simple, when its off, shine a light through it if there is a ring of light then you turn a grub screw and close it slightly til the ring of light dissapears. 18 PSI thats alot what BHP you running? TBH this is what might of happend to me, when i floored it yesterday, a yellow light on the rev counter came on, on 2 occasions. The car drives fine just then light stays on?? |

| MINI2 Master | cheers, yeah, i have a GTT 220 conv, Roland does warn that when you hit 18psi it sort of plays havoc with the raction for some reason and putts the light on. Its brilliant actually, because if i am really gunning it i want the traction off so the car handles properly, hate it when the DSC kicks in sometimes to ruin your fun.....lol Cheers for the help, will order one up in the morning. Thanks all |

Offline | I had exactly the same problem on my car which was caused by the bypass valve.....notably it had a"known modification" done by BMW when they diagnosed the fault...under warranty.....works fine now and i do get about150kw at the wheels...........so the extra boost etc. is being handled Ok by the modified valve.... Now REDJCW |

| MINI2 Regular | I pick up my 03 gunmetal grey MCS on friday ......Ive got a GTT cai to go on straight away, should i do the bypass valve while the airbox is off? Im still unsure how it works , is it the butterfly in the throttle body that is adjusted by the screw?cheers Drew p.s i should change my MINI2 name ![]() Edit: Just had another read at it and released what to do. |

![]() Obsessive Car Cleaner OCC | Very nice Andrew, Your thinking of the throttle body there, its a similar type of looking butterfly but its slightly smaller and under the throttle body just to the left, check the link above and see what it looks like then when you have the airbox and ram pipe of it will make life easier for you. | MINI2 Master | just ordered a new one and will be in tomorrow, £28 seems quite good value. BMW keep surprising me at how well priced their parts are. I always used to moan at hopw expensive VW were, but BMW shock me as i thought they would be well pricey. So changing to my winter wheels on saturday as i saw a gritter last night and will change this straight after, fingers crossed it will sort it all out. |
