Offline | It was one of many changes made when the facelift came in July 04. Quote below is from this site's MINI history page. "In July 2004 the first generation MINI had a "facelift" to coincide with the launch of the MINI Convertible. The new models had different (smooth) grill surrounds, new front and rear bumpers and headlights. Inside the face lifted MINI has a three piece rather than five piece dashboard, a new Getrag gearbox for the One and Cooper, and many other revisions. The Cooper S also jumped from 163 to 170 hp as standard. " Full article here http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?f...ni_generations ![]() MODERN MINI - BEST COOPER NOMINEE - PLEASE VOTE FOR ME!!! |

Offline | Cooper S has always had a 6 speed box made by Getrag. Only ONE and Cooper had a 5 speed Midland box. MINI swapped the Midland box to a 5 speed Getrag unit (which has proved to be only slightly better IMO) in 2004 (This coincided with the release of the "facelift" to all 3 cars). In addition to the ONE and Cooper boxes changing totally the Cooper S 6 speed got smaller ratio box (still Getrag) which has proven to be better 0-60 I believe that as others have said the D has always been a Getrag unit, or possibly the Toyota unit, but most definatly never been a Midland?!
