Okay, I will stick with 5W30. Is it synthetic?

Yes, you want a fully synthetic oil that is designed to last long distances. Royal Purple is good as is Mobil 1 (extended version). I even like Castrol to be honest. Royal Purple is my choice as I have been using it for a while and it hasn't let me down so I stick with it.

No, you need 0w-30.... The weight is 30, but the winter rating is different due to your climate. I believe that you guys are running the 0w. You can check under the hood as it should be stamped on the oil cap. Also, it would be best if you stuck with Castrol Edge if you are not sure of the type of oil to use.

The more miles that are on the car I would put in thicker oil as well eg 10W40 once your over 30-40k miles.

Totally bad idea with today's cars. Machining has come a long way and tolerances are very tight nowadays. This might have been an ok idea in the 70's and maybe the 80's but it is no longer a good idea and could cause wear on the engine.

I'd stick to what is recomend if i was you with these cars. That way there is little margin for wrecking your engine.

You dont want to be putting a thick oil in and then having your engine wrecked after a thousand miles.

yes I would agree with DaFlake and Mess, things have moved on over the last twenty years in terms of oil and engine technology.............definetely stick to the manufacturers recommendations. eg I'm not happy with the long service intervals, but probably will stick to them !!
