DIY Oil Top Up

I checked my oil the other day and noticed that the level had dropped somewhat and it was now at the min level on the dip stick. The car is an 06 cooper and has 22k on the clock. Its telling me i need an inspection in 1500miles aswell. Rather than having the hassle of taking the the dealers just yet i thought id top it up with some new black gold.

To take the oil level backup to the max line it took pritty much all of a litre bottle . Is this normal? as that seems to be a lot to take from min to max on the dip stick?

Car runs a bit smoother now aswell.

Thanks

Yep, depends how hard you drive it plus the cold drinks the oil as well. I would rather put oil into the engine instead of an engine rebuild. Maybe thats why you a litre of oil with the MINI.

Personally I would check mine every 4weeks, I blame my dad for this habit.

It's a good habit Personally I check mine about once a week, so I guess I'm even worse

Just read an article on someone with a new Honda Accord that siezed with about 12,000 miles on it. Honda hit him with the bill for a new engine, as he's never checked the oil level from new. He's expected it to run between services without a check, much like most company car drivers I know do!

Total bill: just over £7,000, reduced to just over £5,000 after a dispute. Still an expensive way to learn

Tigger.

Actually I check it every 1-2 weeks but I didn't want to sound to anal. Depending how much I use the car especially in the summer months with run and shows on. If I'm going on a long run I would check it before the run.

Having had to replace a short engine on a zetec engine before which eats oil v.quickly, I now check my oil once a week!!! I've had mine since June and done around 7,000 miles and put in half a litre over that period (not all at once).

I'm of the same mindset - I try to check it every week, but sometimes I miss a week here and there. Come to think of it, I've not checked my oil in 2008 yet. Well, that's something for me to do later tonight.

You should check any car every time you fill up or one week. If for some reason you have a slow leak, it could be too late before you get the low oil pressure warning. Just good sense and peace of mind.

usually its too late when the light comes on and your engine is not far off in need of replacement.

My old engine used copious amounts of oil, almost as if it was going out of fashion, roughly a litre every 1000 miles. However my new engine has'nt used a drop in 1400 miles even during run -in. so it seems all engines are different

What brand/type engine oil you put in? Is it recommended by Stealership?

Castrol is used by BMW/MINI and recommended. I use Royal Purple.

National tyres are doing Oil changes for £37 including VAT and replacement filter, if you book and pay online you get it for £33.30.

Thats an awesome price considering halfords sell the oil for £42.99

Yeah, but shipping his car over to the UK wouldn't be worth the savings. He is Canadian....

Dealer$hip uses Castrol 5W30 all the way, and I'm thinking to change it to 5W40.

After abit of reading it seems that most US dealers and yours use 5W 30, and the UK dealers use 0W 30.

Do not run a 40 weight in that car, it is to thick and will destroy the engine. The engines today are machined so tightly that there is no reason to run something that thick. Stick to what is recommended. I run high speed autobahn with 30 weight.
