V-Power vs Tesco 99

Over the last couple of month I've been running my own little test of V-Power vs Tesco 99 and how it affects performance and MPG.

Having covered just over 1k miles each on both I've found the following:

V-Power:

Average tank range: 254 miles
Cold start: Starts first time with minimum yo-yoing up to 87C water temp. Sometimes a bit smokey on cold start-up if not been used for a few days
Popping: Stupid amounts at cold and at high rpm gear changes and a flame hitting the limiter during a power run
Maximum manifold pressure (avg): 29.8

Tesco 99:

Average tank range: 221 miles
Cold start: Starts first time with considerable yo-yoing up to 87C water temp
Popping: Still pops but not as much, mainly just at cold and on overun but not as loud
Maximum manifold pressure (avg): 31.4

Performance:

The butt dyno says that Tesco 99 gives around 5 bhp more and it feels more than that through 2nd and 3rd.

Be great to hear what others have found

I ran bp ultimate when i first got my car. After modding quite a bit ive been running vpower ever since.
I think my car runs best on v power.
I trust shell to deal with my petrol over tesco or bp anyday

Now where is your box of tricks?? a 30-70 test on each fuel after using it for a couple of days would be good

Were your trips the same on mpg and distance tests? Must be short distances I guess with distances that low?

I have tried all the fuels and always come back to tescos in the end. Green Energy provide the fuel so I trust them to know what they are doing. Also I get clubcard points

Less popping?? I do actually wish mine was the same! My pops and bangs all the time! Actually gets annoying sometimes.....

I tend to prefer tesco's especially as its a lot cheaper usually.

The next step is the box of tricks test at 30-70 and 50-70 through the gears and in 3rd, the problem is I wasn't able to get the same conditions i.e same temp, dry etc but now I have a lot more free time on my hands I'm going to let 3 tanks of Tesco 99 filter through then do a power run and then do the same with V-power until I get the same conditions to test. I'll brim both tanks just before I do them too.

I've always loved Tesco 99 but the jap boys have always filled with V-Power religously so I thought I'd try it. But 99 is cheaper and you get club card points, however, the japs boys reckon there are just too many additives in 99 which make it burn at a hotter temp and its not as good for the engine... I'm not so sure though to be honest.

I've always wanted more popping as mine certainly doesn't pop as much as others I've heard but the difference between the two petrols was amazing for that.

On the MPG front it was over mixed driving of short trips between 4-8miles and long motorway trips of 140 miles roundtrip. It is staggering though how V-Power gives more MPG. I am still running the Lohen superchips map though as its increased the rev limit and last time it was dynoed at 1320 it hit 230bhp but I'm back there for the Mini Addiction day soon so I'm going to take the map off and run standard and see what happens to both power and economy, once i've done the 30-70 & 50-70 power runs that is.

On standard map with just a CAI and powerflow cat-back and no other mods I used to average 210 miles to a tank!!

Apparently so according to my mate watching on the side lines, it was a limiter, pop, flame job, he got beatings though for not getting it on film.

You guys are lucky to have tesco 99, doesn't exist in N.I. yet as far as I know, looked hard to find it but none so far, just use Esso super unleaded but have used V power which I definitely think is the best I've tried so far.

I have to travel 10 miles to get my shell v power. The petrol in darwen is bp. Recently its been taken over and the owner says its probably going to be shell so good new as i will be able to get there in less than a minute.:biggri n:

I remember seeing a post where someone commented that Tesco 99 burnt hotter than V-Power as measured at exhaust port 1.

I run both in my MCS and have not noticed much difference.

GTT, GRS, Janspeed, JCW, OMP + various other bits - 232.6bhp, 191.2lbft on 1320's rolling road

I'll have to let the performance box measure the difference then as my butt dyno isn't the most accurate.

If 99 does burn hotter then won't the exhuast gases move quicker and increase performance? Just throwing that out there as I failed Physics A-Level.

Previously owning a jap engine'd car im a firm believer in V-power! Performance aside (just for a second) i always find my engine is smoother and more effecient on MPG

I only have a standard cooper so the performance difference is gonna be minor but im using v-power at the moment and waiting to see the benefits after downing a few more tankloads into my cooper as i have only owned it for just over a week! all i will say is that when they remove the filters from the garages the tesco ones are blacker than black compared to the likes of say shell!

all i'm really getting at is that i wouldn't wanna be forcing that sorta crap through my injectors and engine!

I certainly noticed in my old car that litre for litre i got more miles and definatly more bang for my buck! I have used tesco from time to time in desperation and the 99RON ain't a bad alternative but it wouldn't be my first choice!

Lol. Put that idea out of the window as they arent offering any discounts, so if i pay full whack for one and am one of the first to own one. I will feel good for a few months until there are loads on the dealer forecourt going for silly prices.
Ive got an s3 all to myself tommorow afternoon. Cant believe the salesman is letting me take the car out on my own at 20. Is he mad?
That poor car is going to have to put up with alot of stick 2moro

Sounds like good news

I thought it was the bio-Ethanol in 99 that made the exhaust gases so high. But yes I have heard about the excess temps on exhaust valves and seats. Yet to see or hear of a problem though....

Sometime last year one of the ford mags conducted a test on a mildly tuned cosworth lump that was pushing out @ 400bhp. The test was conducted at Field Motorsports on their Studka engine dyno cell. The engine was connected up and run with a normal unleaded fuel to use as a base line (sorry can't remember the brand that was used). After each run the fuel system was completely drained before another brand added. Interesting thing is V-power came out on top (expected) but BP Ultimate (97 ron) produced more power than Tesco 99.
