Cost of Supercharger change anyone

Ok, its looking like the bearings have gone in my supercharger (55k miles) will find out for certain in the morning. But anyone know how much to change the supercharger, preferably the facelift version. I thought someone off here had one done by Paul at 1320. Was it not big show from memory or cooperslad. I honestly can't remember.

Anyway prices please if anyone knows. Do 1320 stock facelift chargers??

Sounds expensive .... what type of noise is it making?

GTT, GRS, Janspeed, JCW, OMP + various other bits - 232.6bhp, 191.2lbft on 1320's rolling road

As it sounds like a turbine spooling up and on idle it clicks and sounds really rough, Kinf of like the speed related noise you get when a wheel bearing goes.

I was Up AMD this morning getting my Milltek checked over as we thought it was leaking from the front. But the guys there diagnosed the noise straight away as the bearing. Although they did say it can be rebuilt its usually cheaper to buy a new supercharger off ebay and fit that instead due to rebuilding the E45 being quite hard to balance when rebuilding.

getting second opinion in the morning

I don't think they stock them but can advise you what to get on ebay. I've seen a couple of S/Cs on ebay recently so i think thats going to be your best bet.

The SC's always use to be coming up on Ebay as people who had the JCW's fitted at the dealer, kept their old one (Or the mechanincs kept them), then it would be fitted at the factory, there is not as many on there now.
They use to go for £100 approx on the bay.

There are one or two on ebay at the moment. I would allow up to £200 for a good low mileage 2nd gen supercharger and I would make a point of asking what year car it came off. The s/c part number should be on a label stuck to the s/c body so if there is any doubt ask for this information.

You could probably fit it yourself, if you are adept with a set of spanners. There is actually someone advertising on ebay, a brand new s/c with possible fitting service.

Hmmmm... i think i will defo keep my 5th Gen charger then.

Have we heard of these wearing out at 55,000 miles before?

Nice to know it was not the pulley setup and kit you've just had fitted

Cheers,

I've not seen many reports of s/c with cooked bearings. But if you have extensively modded the car then it does make sense IMO to have a spare s/c and head. Let's face it, they can be, or at least used to be, available on ebay for peanuts compared to BMW prices.

There are actually more reports of head damage due to spark plugs stripping threads and burnt out exhaust valves, than there are reports of s/c damage. Typically S heads have been selling for £50 on ebay. That has got to be cheaper than a repair.
Now when you also consider that a lot of these s/c and heads are basically brand new it seems like good insurance to me to get a set.

I did just that after I fitted my 15% pulley, bought teflon coated s/c and two cylinder heads, mainly because they were cheap. I think the head is about £1000 from bmw and the s/c is £1100ish from eaton i think

Ok popped down to gtt now and Roland is being a gent and supplying and fitting a black Teflon coated s/charger at a great price, and best bit is he's doing it for me now, so I am still able to do my rolling road next weekend, result!

Thanks for the price Paul but I had to take roland offer up as was easier as already here, here's to a quieter drive home....... LOL

Oh and not sure how much extra power its worth but the sc was used briefly on roland's car so easily means an extra 10bhp surely,,,,,,,LOL

The question is, is it the famous one that made 273bhp....................

Ironically nope, as that 273 was running a standard grey one. This one was only on the car briefly before the turbo makeover.

Its in for RR next weekend not this weekend the 10th

will you be running Tesco 99 or V-Power, and will you be using a 40:1 OB imxture?

are you doing a 3rd gear and a 4th gear blast to see how they differ regarding torque?
