Gearbox Problem??

Last night when I started the car (Mini Cooper S) it was near impossible to get the car into any gear. The gearstick was moving freely but trying to engage first gear, car still with the handbrake on/engine on/clutch engaged but I just couldn't get any gear easily. After jamming it into first the car pulled away fine... but engaging any other gear mean't I had to make sure the clutch pedal was fully pressed and had to use a lot of force to select the gear.

It loosened up a bit as the journey went on and I put it in 6th on the motorway and just kept pressing the clutch fully every few seconds. This seemed to make a difference and the gears were easier to select after, but still not normal/easy.

I got to my destination, picked up my mate and started the car. The gears seemed to be back to normal???? Then this morning after the car sitting in the front for 8+ hours, I'm back to the original problem with the gears being very hard to select once again.

There is no grinding or anything like that from the gears (as long as the clutch is pressed obv.) and the car pulls fine, the clutch is not slipping.

Does anybody know what the problem might be??? Am I doing damage if I continue to drive the car? Thanks in advance!

Ok well car was in today in a BMW specialist. There was also a grinding noise coming from the rear passenger side when breaking so I got that checked first.

The rear discs/pads were completely worn and that was causing the grinding noise. I had the fluid changed in december and asked them to check the brakes then, they said everything was fine so I was kind of annoyed about the brakes obviously not being checked as I previously asked.

Anyway they couldn't replicate the problem regarding the gearbox but they did say that because the pads/discs were so worn that the brake fluid level in the clutch may have been low because of this.... kinda makes sense I guess

Drive home was perfect, the gearbox felt silky smooth again with absolutely no problems Thank god!
