What is the dB limit at Bedford?

Come on guys, would I realy try and make my car permanentl quieter? My Tunnel Running credentials would be ruined forever In fact after hearing Joel's on the last TR I was even thinking about fitting a Borla Race version Still haven't found out what system he was running.

The stock one will just be for Bedford. The noise limits at Bedford Autodrome are 101dB(A) static (measured 0.5m from the exhaust at a 45’ angle at ¾ maximum revs) and 87.5 dB(A) drive-by at 20 metres. They are now operating a ‘one strike and you’re out’ rule. This effectively means that if your car exceeds the drive-by limit, the driver will be black flagged and that car will not be allowed to take any further part in the track day. So it's just not worth taking the risk. Last time I hit 98db static but it's the drive-by level I'm worried about as the car is now considerably louder under WOT... did think about a silencer for bolting on, but getting one to fit the milltek won't be cheap so 1320 can fit a second hand stock exhaust easy enough which also enables me to prove what the gains or otherwise are available by having the Milltek too.

Tempted to put a stock CAI back on too and just having... GRS, Cam, Head, Plugs, Janspeed, 17% Pulley, Remap, Injectors... just imagine if that little lot gave more than 281 bhp... that's some cheap power right there if it does

But I would miss the S/C whine and it goes without saying I need the exhaust for future tunnel runs (next one 10th May btw).

MMMM

I think I would fail both of those tests

Pity I can not do the next tunnel run, it would be good to hear mine rasping through those tunnels.

I would have to bring ear defenders along if you came along

Why are the noise limits so low at race tracks?
A customer took me out in a Ferarri 360 Challenge Stradale today - now that was noisy
But we was moaning about not getting let on tracks

Probably got something to do with the area they're in as the residents complain

We're about 3 -4 miles away as the crow flies and if its a still day we can here them going around the track.

Unfortunatkey the residents were there before the race track , drag racers use to moan about not making noise as new housing estates were built nearby but then found that puting mufflers (silencers) back on actually gained them trq / hp.

Personally I rather have a real quiet exhaust sytem so I can nail it when I want to without people knowing.

If everyone had to run a really quiet exhaust sytem to keep a track open you would adapt to that situation.

The funniest thing was sitting in old red strapped in with my helmet on in the fire up road and I could here Ben going up the strip at the Pod.

The Stradale can't get on any UK circuit now because once the exhaust valves open its like having a team of really small F1 engineers benchtesting one of their V8's inside your ear drum... and that's just from the inside! De-cat it and put a Capristo Stage 3 on and it's indistinguishable from an F1 V8 at 8,250+

Most tracks are now clamping down because of complaints from residents who live nearby, even Silverstone has reduced its db level to 105

That was with the old Powerflow with the one branch single silencer and squashed bean can exit pipe... Good times

Look what we started paul! Somehow I damaged my milltek, it was fine when I first had it but then I had this annoying noise, I did breifly ask Paul when I took my car to 1320s but it was so hard to diagnose and we were at the end of the day. The symptons was a small rattle as the engine came under load from pulling away, you could hear it more so If I slowly let the clutch out as if I was about to stall.

I was convinced it was the tail pipes rattling against the rear bumper, anyway it was diagnosed. Probably just a one off or something, in every other way the Milltek was fantastic!

Yup like I said earler it was "just one of those things" but we new something wasn't right and we just had to work out which part wasn't doing the job as it should

Though the 2nd owner of said system felt the difference on his butt dyno and then confirmed it on our dyno

yeah my Milltek was done under warranty as the rattling noise ended up being what was left from the old Cat inside, had completley smashed to bits from the overfueling. We are all warned that it can eat cats but it does sound great though.

It was windy so the sound quality aint great but you get the idea. Alski drove under strict instruction not to take it above 5k rpm as the 440's and remap aren't happening until next week.

If you want a German JCW back box system mine will be available soon. Send me a PM
My current system is JCM 4/2/1 manifold, high flow sports cat and JCM German challenge rear box setup. It is what is known as full pipe - the whole length of the silencer pipe is drilled
In the GP it is just too loud, will be changing the back box set up to JCM UK Challenge soon, this is a half pipe set up - only half of the silencer pipe is drilled so much quieter but still free flowing.

Neither set up has the flat piece as found in The JCW standard set up

The thing with exhausts is that the are designed for one application,
Knowing the back pressure is a guide to the flow of the exhaust , but they are tuned length pipes and the engine provides pulses of exhaust pressure, and sound pulses these shoot down the pipe and back and the timing and frequency of these effect the flow of exhaust gases and hence the power
As soon as you change something like a pulley or head you alter the speed of the air flow ,this alters the pressure wave , and alters the temperature of the exhaust gas , The tuned length pipe is no longer tuned to your engine!!!!
All exhausts are built and designed for the stock application, and may or may not work well with altered components.
Most manufacturers dont have the budget for long development programs and test on one stock car, its when you fit an exhaust on a stock car and it drops power that there is a fundamental design flaw ( these are usually found on ebay)

Cheers.. on the second run the 'crackling' as my car overtakes another Mini is just the sonic boom

Once its remapped next week and the 440's are on I'll do a proper video and publish my Evo style write up with independant dyno results and performance box figures for those that are interested.
