Why`s the std backbox soooo BIG

Hi to all. My query is simple, i`m planning on buying a stainless exhaust but the backbox on the stainless is alot smaller than std ( 6inch dia round and about 10 inch long with a 3 inch tail pipe approx). Why is the std backbox so big and heavy ? Does it give the car it`s torque or bhp figures and will the stainless have any effect on these figures. I`m a bit concerned that if a fit the stainless it will cause a loss of power . My car is a 2002 mini one. Thanks in advance .

The standard box is designed for noise attenuation, the exhaust gas changes direction inside and is full of sound baffles.you should gain power with a aftermarket one unless the pipe diameter is too large (ie cooper s diameter)
