Cooper head to JCW head

Hi, i have recently bought a 210 bhp JCW cylinder head and am going to fit it to my 01 mini cooper, however i am unsure about the timing chain as i have only ever worked with cam belts has any1 ever performed this before? could anyone provide a step-by-step guide to removing the chain and head.

thanks Ben

If the change over is to increase the performance you will be dissapointed -the head is nearly identicle other than slightly larger exhaust ports ,and these were made larger for the cooper s application
The same inlet valve size ,cam, inlet ports would mean the same amount of air is being sucked in as previously hence no increase in performance.

If it is due the original head failing ,fine and I would suggest getting either a haynes manual or the better Bentley manual -then you have a permanent reference for future use

when i spoke to someone i no at mini in sutton he said that the jcw head was polished and bored and the cam has a higher lift than that of a standard cam, and that the valves are bigger than normal, is this not true?

personally, i wouldnt have bothered as i know of a few guys who have done just that and have got no difference at all, 2 of them had dyno proof.

Although as mini mania and lohen will both tell you the right head and cam can make a difference on the cooper. As long as you have takled the usuall suspects first like manifold .

i remember when i was at Rolands i was able to see all the heads together and the JCW one really is a bit lacklustre, the difference was not a lot, Even when Roland compared it to the wilcox heads ( which i belive he still has a few left) it was notciably smaller. they were 349 from memory. and then there was a huge jump to stage 2 and 4.

Would it not be worth doing that. or at least pop a proper cam in, the schrik is what Lohen use in their demo car.

Just seems to me ripping off the head is not something you want to do all the time, so when you do it you may as well do it properly

ye i mite by a new cam and maybe have the works head gas flowed and some bigger valves ground in. then put the complete head on instead of using mine, seems a shame to waste a brand new head.

Just a thought too, as yours is an 01 Cooper, you may want to think about a gearbox upgrade to the Cooper S box first.... the Midland box is renowned as being a weak point, and if you're looking a cams, heads, manifolds etc - it may not last too long
