Offline | Any interest in uprated R53 driveshafts? I am having uprated driveshafts done for the cooper s ,would these be of interest to anyone ? Gauging interest so I get an idea of numbers to get made. Why -because the stock ones can snap during high power launches and they have a habit of trashing the UJ joints even with stock power levels. the improved one are a better quality material 2 choices either 2.4 times stronger or 3 times stronger (3 times are an extra £50 ) . the uj s are also better using larger bearings ,for the load. these are more suited to lowered cars also due to a thing called "plunge" basically the driveshaft inset depth is altered when in operation and it causes premature failures.(dont ask for elaboration )Cost will be around £300-400 so not greatly different from stock |

Offline | Hi, I'm interested. I've had two driveshafts fail when racing. I know of at least 4-5 other minis that have had the same problem. If you can build it stronger, then I'd be interested, depending on shipment costs to Australia ![]() Out of interest it seems to be the left hand side drive shaft that fails. Everyone I know who has had one fail has asked me if I had a spare, and I've allways had the good right hand side one, but not the left hand one they needed. Maybe it is just coincidence, but I don't think so ![]() Cheers Robbo Mods: GO MADDIE and SPARKY! |

Offline | Re GB -I dont know.let me get some made first. Robbo- yes its a common problem ,even off track and almost always the same side( 90% + ) Slowly peice by piece Im looking to remove any weak areas of the car - For Track drivers ,a lot of time effort and preparation goes into a weekend meeting and long diatances travelled to a from them - to have a failure after 10 minutes must be really depressing to say the least! The longer /stronger/and faster the MINI goes ,the more the "other " car drivers will notice and think perhaps they are the car to have..... .the more popular...the more development.....the faster....etc The time will come when the "classic "mini becomes the "vintage" mini and the "new" MINI ,becomes the "classic" MINI ![]() |

Offline | A bit more info on the driveshafts: the material spec being used is the same as the one used on helicopter tail rotor shafts (not prone to failure as you can imagine) two options are in debate at the moment -hollow shafts or solid ? Hollow shafts allow a certain give or flex this will prevent shock snapping or a larger solid shaft ,this moves the shock loading to the weakest point - uses dictate the option drag or track? the splines are to be made by another method than stock and slightly longer and cv joints a lot different. I have a question for any Lhd car owners -have you had a failure in the driveshaft/CV if so which side failed? |
