Online | Shopping for Air Induction I recently got the milltek exhaust system fitted and it has made the engine noise seem not as good as it used to be. What im wondering is, which air induction is best for a 2001 Mini ONE?? I heard a K&N 571i (i think) today and it sounded nice, but their is always the typhoon, pipercross, viper etc etc. I dont know which one is best and will do the car good. Any help appreciated, comments on your own anything. Thanks ![]() |

Offline | I love the John Cooper Motorsport Open Cone Air Filter (JCM510). Same as the Pipercross filter (indeed, new ones are branded Pipercross), but has a shorter connecting hose with the kit. It sounds simply awesome. ![]() Here's are some relevant links on induction for you (and definately chase up Serby ):Mini one slight tuneI'm now running the JCM510 kit in combination with a Milltek cat-back - the result is breathtaking. ![]() All the best, Andrew. Offline | Also running the JCM cone filter here, but mie is the older one. The induction sound is immense, really love it. The one thing that does concern me though is heat soak from the engine. The car can feel a little breathless sometimes when accelerating from a combination of low revs and low speeds. I have a DIY cold air feed to it, and will be looking into building a heat shield too. It's the one problem with open cone induction kits of any brand. ![]() MODERN MINI - BEST COOPER NOMINEE - PLEASE VOTE FOR ME!!! |

Offline | Ah, no - the one I'm running is an open cone and is absolutely not enclosed. NeuroBeaker - Proud owner of "Zeus" (a 'slightly modified' 2004 MINI ONE). *WARNING!* Thesis writing in progress. Experiments continue. Multi-tasking? Explosion imminent! |

Offline | As aforementioned, it is a John Cooper Motorsport Open Cone Air Induction Kit. The product code for this is JCM510 (you will need to specify that you need the full kit rather than just the cone filter). It was ~£150 and there is no heat shield. One problem I have had with the installation is that on the new cone design, I found it absolutely impossible to get the cone to slot into the rubber offered with the kit. I tried warming the rubber, stretching it over a wine bottle, etc, etc... The rubber part of the kit seems physically to be able to stretch wide enough to go around the bottom of the cone, but I absolutely cannot manage it - I think special tools are required. Consequently, I've had to slot the rubber into the cone (only option to get it onto the car). This creates a ridge inside the cone which will disrupt the air flow into the engine - undoubtedly reducing efficiency. At some point, I'll have to seriously try to sort that out - but I've not been able to yet. I might ask a tuner to have a look at it for me when I'm setting about getting an ECU remap in the next month or two. All the best, Andrew. Online | Very impressive. I would love to attend the Yorkshire dales run, i will seriously consider it. I will check the links now, thanks for that! Lord BladerNI! ![]() EDIT: just read through the links and cannot find an online shop on the websites. Do you have to ring up and ask?? And last question, is there much of a difference between the pipercross and the JCM induction kit?? ![]() |

Offline | Don't think theres much difference, I used to have the pipercross and recommend it, i switched to the pipercross viper after a while but missed the sound so switched back (there wasn't much performance difference if any) easy to fit and sounded great with the milltek p.s the video I posted in the milltek group buy thread was with the viper and milltek so it was a little bit louder than that ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Online | Thanks for that!! I just wanted to make sure before i bought anything. i like the sound off the JCM one and pipercross but the pipercross seems easier to get hold of lol With the pipercross, did you need a heatsheild or any other way of mounting it? Did it affect the car at all? Thanks ![]() |

Offline | It felt faster at first but now i think it was probably due to the noise, you could probably make a heat shield for it quite easily but tbh i dont think it's going to lose or gain that much power either way unless maybe its a boiling hot day and youve been driving aggresively for a long time. As i said i didnt notice any performance increase with the pipercross viper over the standard pipercross and the viper has a carbon heat shield around it so who knows. Get the pipercross and i don't think you'll regret it ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Offline | Good stuff - I think some of the Irish contingent will be driving past Glasgow on the Friday (then I'll be going in convoy with them from there to Yorkshire) so perhaps you could join us for that too? Yes, you have to phone to place an order - mention you're a MINI2.com member for a 5% discount. The difference really is in the tubing that mounts the filter onto the throttle body. The cone itself is a slightly different shape, but the filter material is exactly the same stuff - and the more recent JCM induction kit is now branded with 'Pipercross' across it.
