There is no reason why you couldn't modify a Cooper engine to make the car faster than a stock S. It will invalidate the warranty and that's the main reason for many of the mods they put on the S, to make it last as long as a regular Cooper while getting another 50hp out of it. If you just need an engine to last you through a race weekend before you rebuild it, you can tune it much higher.
