Offline | Forgive my ignorance, but aren't these two different things..? OBD-II is 'OnBoard Diagnositcs' version 2 isn't it..? Something that they have to put in for the US market and basically is the thing that controls the 'Service Engine Soon' light and the distance to oil change counter, stuff like that. To give your car more hp, that's engine mapping which is something completely different, usually done by replacing the main ECU chip (like SuperChips). Am I missing something here..? |

Offline | ERT's Wording Could Have Been Better... All engine management upgrades to the MINI are done to what is by definition an OBD II ECU. Not just ERT's product. OBD II is more than the "check engine light" software, though. It is the software-sensor system that enables post-1995 cars to manage emissions and control fuel management, as well as to read out engine performance problems. Ideally, an engine modification done to the MINI (like an intake) would avoid producing a change in engine function that the sensors sent back to the software that caused the ECU to modify some aspect of engine management, like fuel flow, that nullified the purpose of the modification. This "evasion" is hard to do with OBD II, because the sensor system collects so much data. This is also why OBD I cars were easier to modify. See: http://www.obdii.com/ |
